Swimming In The Street: A recent rain and construction men with road building equipment combined to provide a swimming hole for these Ann Arbor boys who are jumping in to cool off and escape the recent humid weather. The scene -- believe it or not -- is new Wines Dr., an 80-foot-wide boulevard that will form the main entry into Westport Subdivision No. 3 at the city's northwest side, when the street is completed.

A far cry from the days of the covered sidewalk, this block of W. Michigan Ave., in Ypsilanti (bottom) [this photo] now resembles the main street of any typical American community. The wooden sidewalk covering "disappeared" mysteriously and prematurely one night shortly after the turn of the century, allegedly torn down by a group of spirited local youths. The "then" picture (top) was taken sometime before 1893. The top floor of the corner building which now houses a drugstore (center background, both views) was razed about 40 years ago following a fire.
