Actress Helen Hayes Visits Polio Patients Here - Actress Helen Hayes, who has been a leader in polio work since the tragic death of her daughter, Mary MacArthur, from that disease in 1949, visited polio patients in the Respiratory Center of the University of Michigan Hospital here Friday. Left to right are: Miss Hayes, who is appearing in the play, "Mrs. McThing," in Detroit; Mrs. Gerald Cooper, Hillsdale; and Mrs. Milton Vreeland, Jackson. Miss Hayes helped to establish the first respirator center in the country, at Wellesly Hills, Mass., which is named after her daughter and is supported largely by theater people. Christmas Party In Respirator Center at University Hospital, December 1952

Ann Arbor News, December 19, 1952

A touch of Christmas happiness lingered in University Hospital's respirator center yesterday afternoon when Mrs. S. J. Ojack (center, standing) sponsored a party for the patients and nurses. A special guest at the affair was Mrs. John Ehlers (second from left), daughter-in-law of Prof. and Mrs. George M. Ehlers, who is a patient at an outstate institution. Santa Claus (in the person of Nick Long, a teacher of juvenile patients) brightened the occasion. At the right is Mrs. Smith B. Atwood, jr., of 1815 Hiawatha P. Both she and Mrs. Ehlers have been "weaned" from treatment in chest respirators and are gradually regaining use of their paralyzed limbs.
