The last day of school couldn't have come too soon, as students and teachers sweltered through the final days in non-air conditioned classrooms in near-record heat. Teachers finish up for the year today after turning in grades. Classes don't resume until late August or early September. The school calendar for the coming year has not yet been established. Of course, that's the last thing on the mind of the students, who will be filing up local pools, going to camp or hitting the road for family vacations in the coming weeks.

LOTS OF HUNDREDS - Anne Kloack's kindergarten class at Allen Elementary School in Ann Arbor celebrated the 100th day of the school year Monday by studying the concept of the number 100. With 100 balloons decorating the classroom, students brought in 100 of various items - Valentine candies, baseball cards and paper hearts, among other items - to share. They used 100 napkins to wipe their hands after devouring 100 pieces of pizza. Kloack said the exercises help youngsters become acquainted with large numbers which are often hard to understand.

Twenty-two first graders at John Allen Elementary School, as part of their study of China, ate a sample Chinese meal with chopsticks this week. Their teacher, Mrs. Marion Krause, decided to give the youngsters this unusual learning experience when Mrs. James Chu (shown in the background, above), mother of one of the children in the class, volunteered to help with the project. Mike O'Boyle (at right) shows utter disbelieve that even the Chinese manage to eat with chopsticks as he valiantly tries to pick up his food with the strange instruments. Sitting next to him is John Kostishak, who seems to be doing well at mastering the art. The children added to the flavor of the occasion by fashioning hats as an art project.

AN HISTORIC VISIT - Allen Elementary School students stare up at Benjamin Franklin (a.k.a. Robert Bray) Thursday morning as American history comes to life right before their eyes. At left, Bray listens to a question but has to ask the questioner to speak up. 'You have to talk loud,' he says, 'these ears are 285 years old.' Your favorite invention Mr. Franklin? 'My favorite invention is right on my nose,' he says, referring to his bifocal eye glasses. Do you play sports, Mr. Franklin? 'What's a sport?... I was a good swimmer. In fact my first invention was shingles that I attached to my feet. You call them flippers.'
