SET TO OPEN: The Quality Bakery at 347 S. Main St., destroyed by fire last January, will reopen tomorrow, according to Russell T. Dobson, owner of the building. The bakery is operated by Oscar Laubengayer. Adjoining it is a shoe repair store, which has operated at 115 E. Liberty St., ravaged by fire the same night, is still undergoing reconstruction. Henry W. deKoning is the contractor for both projects.

A Fireman's Lot: There's always a shower of water -- winter or summer, night or day -- when a fireman is at work. Here an Ann Arbor firefighter grits his teeth in the cold early morning air as a torrent of water falls over him during the Quality Bakery blaze.

Firemen Battle Bakery Blaze: While fellow firemen fought another damaging fire at the Modern Appliance Co. little more than a block away, this group of firefighters shot thousands of gallons of water and high-pressure fog into the Quality Bakery at 347 S. Main St., standing atop the cinderblock kitchen at the rear of the building, firemen face away from the flaming inferno that a few minutes before was the central structure of the bakery.

And This Was Left: Burned, boiled and baked -- little of value remained after flames swept through the Quality Bakery, consuming inflammables and destroyed by heat what would not burn. This is the central area of the three-section building where the heart of the bakery was located. The brick business office at the front was burned out but only water and smoke damage was done to the kitchen ovens at the rear. Damage was tentatively set at $25,000 or more.
