SCHOOL WORK PROGRESS: Although the schools no longer are scheduled to be open for classes next fall, construction work is continuing at the Lee M. Thurston Elementary School and the Lawton Elementary School. The school board dropped plans to open classes next fall when the proposal for 7 1/2 mills in operating revenue was defeated at the polls. Thurston School is in the Nixon-Plymouth Rds. area, near North Campus and the Bendix Systems Division, and Lawton School is south of Scio Church Rd. near a proposed extension of Seventh St.

NEW SCHOOL NEARS COMPLETION: The public school system's financial crisis will keep the new Lee M. Thurston Elementary School (pictured above) closed this fall. Now nearing completion, the school is located in the Nixon-Plymouth Rd. area. Architect for the project is O'Dell, Hewlett, Luckenbach & Associates of Birmingham. Total cost for the project is about $473,000. Work is said to be on schedule.
