Back Board Rescue Method Demonstrated Demonstrating the use of a back board at Buhr Park are city pool lifeguards (from left in the water) Tom Wilkins, Dave Baldwin, Waneta Boman and Tom Peck. Stephanie Mills is tied to the rescue board. According to Tom Mollet, head of the Red Cross Water Safety Program, Ann Arbor is one of the first cities in the state to use the back board method of rescue. The board is designed to immobilize victims with back or neck injuries during the rescue process and to eliminate any further injury which could occur by trying to lift the victim onto a stretcher or into an ambulance.

After fireworks were over, youngsters this morning began "salvage operations" at Buhr Park. While city workers proceeded with cleanup operations, many children "assisted" by looking for souvenirs and booty left behind by the crowd, estimated at 6,500 persons, which watched the fireworks set off by the "Spirit of '76" club last night. Pictured are (from left) Matt Kerns, 10, of 2416 Medford; Mark Gray, 11, of 3143 Creek; John Rose, 12, of 2956 St. Aubin, and John's brother David, 10. They didn't say what they found.

They served as victims during the annual disaster training exercise for a dozen area police and civil defense agencies. The students had realistic wounds placed on them and were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance. The exercise simulated a gas explosion and fire which would injure and burn 141 person.
