Seventeen Negro men left Ann Arbor by train this morning for Fort Custer to begin Army training. A farewell party was given for them Friday night at Dunbar Civic Center. With the group in the above photograph is Rev. C. W. Carpenter, pastor of the Second Baptist church. The men (from left to right) are: Kenneth Fox, Adoulphus P. Thompson, George Cromwell, Furman Wright, Leon F. Whitehead, Arthur F. Jones, Rev. Mr. Carpenter, Sherman Baker, Vernon B. Adams, Earl E. Jackson, Samuel Thomas, Sidney Henry Rinke, Robert M. Scott, Howard Lee Miller, Clinton Brantley, Frank Edward Bostic, Richard Anderson. The 17th inductee, William F. Hawkins, was not present when the picture was taken.

Just before the bus left this morning, taking him to Detroit and induction in the armed services, the last Ann Arbor draftee in the second bus (above) received the most appropriate of all farewells. More than 500 townspeople heard Mayor Leigh J. Young and the University ROTC and marching bands in the send-off program for the men of Selective Service Board No. 1 this morning.

A FITTING FAREWELL: Among the city selectees leaving for induction this morning was Russell S. Howland, shown above leading the combined University ROTC and marching bands which contributed to the send-off program arranged for the contingent. Mr. Howland was invited by Prof. William D. Revelli, director of the bands, to take the baton as an audience of more than 500 applauded the gesture.
