PROGRAM
Recollection of an Age......Francois Adrien Boieldieu
Boieldieu (1775-1834) lived just prior to the time when Marie Taglioni became the leading ballerina of the classical romantic style of ballet dancing. The composer was married to a ballet dancer Clotilde Malfeury and was conductor at the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg. Undoubtedly Boieldieu witnessed a great deal of dancing during his lifetime, but he is not known to have composed a work especially for the ballet. His harp concerto, however, brings to mind the sweetness, vivacity, and vitality of the ballet's golden romantic age.

"If the way which, as I have shown, leads hither seems very difficult, it can never?theless be found. It must indeed be difficult since it is so seldom discovered; for if salvation lay ready to hand and could be discovered without great labour, how could it be possible that it should be neglected almost by everybody But all noble things are as difficult as they are rare."--Spinoza
