Prakrit! and Ananda--Dance Drama (The Entire Company)
The Mother: Pran-ati Sen Gupta Prakriti: Jharna Dutta Ananda: Sadhan Guha
The ballet opens with young girls and boys dancing to welcome Spring. Prakriti, a girl of the untouchable caste, wants to join them but is spurned. A card seller and a bangle-seller are warned not to sell to her as she is an untouchable. Broken-hearted, she refuses to offer flowers to a god that has made her an untouchable, but is made happy when a passing procession of Buddhist monks do not seem to mind her caste. Prakriti is filling her jug with water from a well when Ananda, a disciple of Lord Buddha appears and asks for water. Prakriti reveals her caste but Ananda tells her that they arc both human and takes water from her.
Prakriti falls in love with Ananda and requests her mother, a witch, to use her magic powers to bring Ananda back. The mother calls her disciples to join her magic rituals
and requests one of them to bring a magic mirror to observe the effects of the magic upon Ananda. The disciple at first refuses, as she knows the evil effects of the mirror can produce death, but is compelled to bring the mirror. Prakriti looks into the mirror and sees the agonies the magic is causing Ananda.
The mother's witchcraft brings wind, rain, storm and thunder, and finally Ananda appears. The mother, exhausted by her magic rituals, dies. Ananda is on the verge of losing himself to Prakriti when the mighty power of Lord Buddha recalls him to his spiritual life.
