ABOUT THE CONDUCTORS
Thor Johnson, Director of the Academy and Conductor of the Orchestra holds an A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina, a master's degree from The University of Michigan, and honorary doctorates from nine colleges and universities. He studied con?ducting with Felix Weingarter. Bruno Walter, Nicolai Malke, and Serge Koussevitsky. He has been conductor of the University of Michigan Orchestra, the Juilliard Symphony, Symphony of the Air (Tour of the Orient), Cincinnati Symphony, Northwestern University Symphony, and the Chicago Little Symphony. Since 1940 he has been Guest Conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Annual May Festival, conducting the Choral Union pro?grams. He is currently in his seventh season with the Nashville Symphony.
Byron Hanson is Head of the Music Division of the Academy, in addition to filling the posts of Resident Orchestra Conductor and conductor of the Academy Band. He has parti?cipated in six seasons of the Peninsula Music Festivals and for three summers has conducted the Kentucky Wind Ensemble.
