Saturday Evening, October 2, 1976, at 8:30 Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Benny Goodman is unique among artists, as original in his fashion as a Charlie Chaplin or a Jackson Pollock. He is, quite simply, the King of Swing, the one musician who most embodies the Swing Era and its music, that marvelously American creation the roots of which go back to folk tunes and ragtime and gather together elements of the blues, Dixieland, hot jazz and sweet dance. In the 1930s, '40s and early '50s, Benny Goodman and his matchless clari?net were symbols for swing: Benny at Los Angeles' Palomar in 1935; Benny at Manhattan's Paramount Theater in 1937; Benny the next year giving the first jazz concert ever held in Carnegie Hall; Benny at San Francisco's Golden Gate Exposition; Benny in Chicago and Los Angeles; Benny everywhere the length and breadth of the land. Those were the Swing Era years, too, of Count Basie and Artie Shaw, of Glenn Miller, Harry James, the Dorsey brothers and many, many more.
Times change. Some musical forms are born, rise to a crescendo then fade into history. But swing--assuredly in the person of Benny Goodman--lives happily on into the 1970s. The King remains, not as a pale ghost of yesterday but as a vital, constantly evolving modern musician, forever refining and enriching his art for all generations, reinforcing old favorites, bringing his own special meaning and genius to the com?positions of a Henry Mancini or a Burt Bacharach or an Antonio Carlos Jobim.
