Murray Louis' international tours have taken him across the United States and Canada, to Europe, Africa, Central and South America, with special engagements in Tunisia, Yugoslavia, India, and Mexico, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Louis is the recipient of two Guggenheim Memorial Fellowships in Dance, has been presented with the Critics' Award of the International Festival of Weisbaden, and recently, in 1977, Dance Magazine Award, and honored with six grant awards from the National Endowment for the Arts. The six works choreographed with these grants, including "Porcelain Dialogues" and "Geometries," have been shown around the world to high acclaim from critics and the public. In 1975, Mr. Louis created a new ballet, "Moments," for Rudolf Nureyev, premiered in Madrid and given its American premiere by Mr. Nureyev and members of the Louis Company in November of that year. In 1976, within a threemonth span, Mr. Louis had two works premiered on different sides of the Atlantic--"Glances," at the American Dance Festival in New London, Connecticut, and "Cleopatra," created especially for the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen.
Mr. Louis has also created a fivepart film series, "Dance as an Art Form," as well as adapting several of his ballet works for television. This fall, portions of "Glances" will be filmed for the PBS show, Soundstage, featuring the work of composer Dave Brubeck. The Company will then be appearing in the new Bermuda Arts Festival, and touring throughout the United States and Canada. Following a home season in New York, shared with the Nikolais Dance Theatre in April, the Company will make a celebrated return to Europe, partially under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Department.
