By the time Englishborn George Shearing was twentyone, he had already established himself in London as a top star in supper clubs, and his recordings there were on the bestseller lists. In 1947, he came to the United States (later to become an American citizen) where he organized his first quintet for the nowhistorical LP recording which included a number called "September in the Rain." Emanating from that album was "the Shearing sound," with Shearing's name many times topping every trade paper, disc jockey, and jazz poll of any significance.
Mr. Shearing makes his own arrangements, and as a composer he has also written many hit songs. His TV guest appearances--with Johnny Carson, David Frost, Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett, and others--are numerous, and he has completed twentysix onehalf hour segments of "The George Shearing Show" for nationally syndicated television featuring the quintet and top guest vocalists. National Educational Television also featured him on a onehour show for its nationwide NET channels.
