Shortly after the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra of Munich was created in 1949 under the leadership of Eugen Jochum, it excelled in the works of Richard Strauss, and it was with this orchestra that Strauss gave his last performance as a conductor just three months before his death in September, 1949. Under Rafael Kubelik, who followed Jochum in 1959, the orchestra has played countless concerts at home, in key cities of Europe, and at distinguished festivals. Celebrated men such as Klemperer, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Stokowski, Mitropoulos, Ormandy, Steinberg, Munch, Maazel, and Bernstein have appeared on the podium as guest conductors.
Mr. Kubelik's imaginative programming has enlarged the orchestra's repertoire immeasurably. Among his offerings are various lesserknown works of his compatriots, Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek, and Martinu, and such outstanding special events as a series of sacred works, a survey of symphonic poems, and, of course, the symphonies of Mahler which have become part of the standard repertoire due, in large part, to his efforts.
The Bavarian Symphony Orchestra first performed in Ann Arbor in 1968 during its inaugural American tour, and Mr. Kubelik appeared here with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1951 and 1952, and again with the Bavarian in 1968.
