When he was twenty-two, Couperin composed two masses for organ, intended for use at low mass without choir. The Mass jor the Parishes, heard tonight, is the larger of the two, an imposing work in which he took the established plain chant of the church service and elaborated it into fantasies for organ, one for each section of the mass. It is believed that he composed it for his own use at St. Gervaise, the church in Paris where Couperin succeeded his father as organist.

Summer Fare "Bonus" Concert
Peter Williams is distinguished in the musical world as an organist, harpsichordist, teacher, and historian. After studying at St. John's College, Cambridge, he affiliated with the University of Edinburgh where he is curator of the magnificent collection of harpsichords and clavichords in the Raymond Russell Collection. His definitive book, The European Organ 1450-1850, and his book on continuo playing, Figured Bass Accompaniment, are soon to be joined by a fundamental and new study, in two volumes, of The Organ Music of J. S. Bach and A New History of the Organ from the Greeks to the Present-day. He is also editor of The Organ Yearbook (Amsterdam).
Dr. Williams began harpsichord studies with Thurston Dart at Cambridge and continued, from 1963, with Gustav Leonhardt. Both artists have been in residence this week at the University School of Music.
