Born in New York of Lebanese parents, Walid Howrani was raised in Beirut and at the age of 15 entered Moscow's famed Central School of Music. After graduating with highest honors, he continued at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and studied under celebrated -pianists Yakov Zak and Emil Gilels. He was awarded the Certificate of Honor at the International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 18 and two years later was named Laureate at the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium Competition. Concert tours of the Soviet Union, Poland, the Middle and Near East followed, as well as in Canada and the United States where he has performed in over 60 cities. He has recently given recitals at Dayton University (Ohio), Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.), in Paris and Beirut, and will soon depart for appearances with the Berlin Radio Symphony.
Mr. Howrani, who currently resides in Ann Arbor, is making his Musical Society debut this evening.
