The surfeit of "piano ballets" that have appeared since Jerome Robbins' Dances at a Gathering (1969) have sought to somehow humanize and demystify the classical ballet dancer and his milieu. Piano ballets take the aristocracy out of ballet dancing by presenting dancers as affectionately friendly, democratic, just plain folks moving simply to the music of a solo piano. There is something in this genre akin to the television talk show which, in its way, attempts to demystify noted celebrities by elevating their laundry problems to conversational art. Yes, Virginia, Another Piano Ballet was first created for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo in 1976. Mr. Anastos has made several revisions in the work since then and includes two new sections in his version for Pennsylvania Ballet.

This work is inspired not only by Alexander Calder's mobiles, but also by his circus, his mechanized sculpture, his toys and, above all, by his sense of humor. It is a fairy tale, a fantasy, which follows the adventures of Corolla, the Sun Child, and her hypnotic attraction to the Fantasy Family of the beautiful Entincelle, Queen of the Mobiles.
