One of the most celebrated ballets of the 19th century was La Sylphide, set in Scotland. In Scotch Symphony, Balanchine evokes the elusive figure of this Sylph and captures the robust, colorful, almost martial character of Highland dancing.
This classical ballet (to the last three movements of Mendelssohn's symphony) was created for the New York City Ballet in 1952.
