About the Artists
Without a word, Marcel Marceau has brought laughter and tears to people throughout the world. Outside of his home country, Mr. Marceau has toured extensively throughout Continental Europe including the Iron Curtain countries. Great Britain, North and South America, Israel, India, Russia, Japan, North and South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and most recently to China where he met with absolute and unqualified success. Following the China tour, Mr. Marceau returned to Paris where his fertile imagination resulted in several new creations -these he presented to Parisian audiences during the month of November. This weekend, Ann Arbor audiences arc privileged to be the first in the United States to see these new works, as Mr. Marceau comes direct from Paris to begin his North American tour in our city. This marks his seventh visit to Ann Arbor since the opening of the Power Center in 1971, for a total of 21 performances on this stage.
Mr. Marccau's versatility is apparent in his many television appearances -a favorite talk-show guest, a one-man show entitled "Meet Marcel Marceau," and a recent special with Red Skelton; and in motion pictures -"First Class" in which he portrayed 17 different roles, and "Shanks" where he combined his silent art as a deaf puppeteer and his speaking talent as a mad scientist. A further example of his multiple talents is the mimodrama "Candide" which he created for the Ballet Company of the Hamburg Opera. He not only directed this work, but also performed the title role. Children continue to be delighted by his highly acclaimed "Marcel Marceau Alphabet Book," the "Marcel Marceau Counting Book," and "The Story of Bip," written and illustrated by Mr. Marceau. The mimist's most recent venture in the publishing field, 1982, is "The Third Eye," a collection often lithographs of Marcel Marceau the artist, for which he also wrote an accompanying text. These lithographs are on display in the lobby for the viewing pleasure of those attending this weekend's performances.
In recognition of the mimist's brilliant artistry, the French Government has conferred upon Mr. Marceau its highest honor, making him a "Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur."
Jean-Jerome Raclot was born in Paris in 1958 and studied at Marcel Marceau's International School of Mime from 1977 to 1982. He has appeared with the companies of Pierre Richy and Claude Kichky, and worked at the Theatre du Chatelet with Rudolf Nureyev inPetrouchka and in Luigi Pizzi's production of Macbeth. In September he toured in Spain with Marcel Marceau and now makes his first appearances with the mimist in the United States.
