About the Artist
Ivo Pogorelich was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1958. He began piano studies at age seven, and when he was eleven he went to Russia to study at the Central Music School and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He subsequently won five Yugoslavian competitions and the 1978 Allessandro Cassagrandc International Competition in Italy before gaining international attention in June 1980 as first prize winner in the Montreal International Competition. Since his highly acclaimed recital debut in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981, he has performed regularly as a rccitalist and with many of the world's major orchestras, including those of Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. His summer appearances include the Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia, Salzburg, and Tanglewood, and last season included a tour of Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. High?lighting his current season arc performances with the Boston, Dallas, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras, and the Berlin and New York Philharmonics.
In his Ann Arbor debut, Mr. Pogorelich opens the ninth season of the Debut & Encore Series.
