ACT I
It is Christmas Eve, and guests make their way to a Christmas party at the home of Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum. Their children, Mary and Fritz, await the arrival of their friends. The guests enter, and the festivities begin. Soon Mary's mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer and his nephew join the festivities. They bring magical gifts for the group and a toy Nutcracker for Mary.
When the evening's revelries arc over, Mary is discouraged from taking her Nutcracker to sleep with her -she awakens during the night and returns to the darkened drawing room to fetch her cherished new toy. She soon falls asleep on the sofa with the Nutcracker beside her, and her dream-fantasy begins.
The room is invaded by mice, toy soldiers come to life, and Mary's treasured toy Nutcracker turns into a soldier who battles the mice. The victorious Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince, who invites Mary to journey with him to the Kingdom of Sweets. Mary and the Prince pass through a snow-covered forest, where the King and Queen of Snow dance for them.
INTERMISSION
ACT II
Upon their arrival in the Kingdom of Sweets, Mary and the Prince are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy, who presents a grand celebration in Mary's honor. The sweets of many nations entertain them, including Marzipan, Candy Canes, Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate. The celebration culminates with the Sugar Plum Fairy's romantic pas dc deux with her Cavalier. Following a delightful reprise, Mary and the Prince realize that they must go. Amid fond and wistful goodbyes, they leave this magical land.

About the Company
Since 1976, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has visited Ann Arbor for its annual performances of The Nutcracker. Since 1983, the company has invited local area children to participate in these concerts, a collaboration fostering community interest and involvement in dance and providing many children a glimpse into the world of the professional dancer.
Patricia Wilde, one of America's foremost classical ballerinas, has been artistic director of the company for the last five years, guiding it to its present position among the nation's leading ballet companies. The company's new managing director is Stephen J. Richard, who formerly directed the growth and development of the Los Angeles Theatre Center for seven years.
The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Allegheny County, and the City of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is a member of DanceUSA, the national service organization for non-profit, professional dance in America.
