SECOND CONCERT OF THE 1 1 4TH SEASON 1 1 4TH ANNUAL CHORAL UNION SERIES
PROGRAM NOTES
Sonata No. 4 in E minor, K. 304
Woljgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Ai ihe height of his career, during his mature years in Vienna, Mozart was admired at least as much for his brilliant piano playing as for his compositions, which were then thought to be only incidental to the work of a performing virtuoso. In his youth he had played the violin too in the Archbishop's court orchestra in Salzburg, but he always preferred the piano. His father, Leopold Mozart, was a distinguished violinist and teacher whose important instruction book was first published in 1746 and was still widely studied in the nineteenth century. Leopold always regretted Wolfgang's gradual abandonment of his instrument and once wrote in a letter to him that if he would apply himself and stay with it, he would be "the first iolinist in Europe."
Wolfgang Mozart wrote about three dozen sonatas for violin and piano. During most of his lifetime, the musical world considered such pieces very differently from the way we do now. They were piano sonatas, and the violin part, often dispensable, was called the "accompaniment." Mozart began to change this common practice by enriching the role of the violin. In 1783 a critic noted with some surprise that in his work "the accompaniment of the violin is so artfully combined with the keyboard part that [his] sonatas require just as skillful a player on the violin as at the keyboard."
In 1777, dissatisfied with his position on the musical staff of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, Mozart sought and obtained leave for a long concert tour during which he secretly hoped to find a more rewarding post elsewhere. The Archbishop would not release Mozart's father from his duties at the same time, so his ailing mother accompanied him instead. On September 23, they set out on a sixteen-month trip during which the young composer would mature greatly.
They made a long stop in Mannheim, where he met many musicians in the city's orchestra, the greatest in Europe at the time. He also fell in love with the sister of the woman who would later become his treasured wife. In Paris, his mother died, and he was alone for the first time in his life. His search for a better job was a failure.
The E-minor Sonata, K. 304, is the fourth of the set, and, like all but one of them, follows the two-movement model of Joseph Schuster and of Johann Christian Bach, whom Mozart greatly admired. Christian Bach, Sebastian's youngest son, was an important figure in his time and had known Mozart since childhood. Schuster (1748-1812) is known in the history of music for little more than Mozart's encounter with his work. Mozart's music resembles theirs only in the number of movements. The rich and independent violin part is a wholly new stylistic idea. The Allegro is a bold and dramatic structure, with a long and complex main subject that no other composer then alive, with the possible exception of Haydn, could have imagined. The second movement is a set of variations in Tempo di Menuelto.
Sonata No. 9 in A major, Op. 47 ("Kreutzer")
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
In 1802, Beethoven wrote a set of three violin sonatas that he dedicated to Czar Alexander 1. But in preparing them for publication he found the finale of the first sonata disproportionately grand in scale and wrote a more modest one for it. In the spring of 1803, a splendid young violinist from London arrived in Vienna for a slay of a few months, and shortly after meeting him Beethoven decided that they should have a new sonata to play together. The visitor was young George Bridgetower (ca. 1780-1860), the son of a black African father and a European mother, on temporary leave from the service of the Prince of Wales. Bridgetower had been a member of Haydn's orchestra in London, a favorite of the royal family, and he was later to take a degree from Cambridge University and to have a fine career on the Continent. Beethoven quickly composed two movements to precede the grand finale originally written for Op. 30, No. 1, and on May 24, 1803, they gave the new sonata its first public performance.
Beethoven intended to publish it with a formal dedication to Bridgetower, but when summer came the two men quarreled over a young woman, and Beethoven dedicated it instead to Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831), a brilliant French violinist
he had met in Vienna five years earlier. The switch in dedications is full of irony and perhaps spite, for Beethoven hardly knew Kreutzer. He wrote to him, he said, about once a year and his letters were unanswered. Kreutzer never played the Sonata in public, because, according to Berlioz, he found it unintelligible, and it is this dedication, rather than the hundreds of his own compositions, that immortalized Kreutzer.
The Sonata is bold, original, large-scaled and difficult. The violin starts the first movement's slow introduction, Adagio sosknuto. When the Presto main section begins, it is in the key of A minor; the major does not return until the finale. The music is stormy and dramatic, pausing occasionally as though for a deep breath before renewing the attack on the emotions of the listeners and the strength of the performers. The slow movement is a long and beautiful Andante theme and variations. The Presto finale is a galloping sonata-form movement with a memorable, feather-light second theme. The forward motion of the steady beat is sometimes thrown off by a phrase in contrasting rhythm and even slows to Adagio for two brief moments before the forceful closing coda.
Sonata in E minor, Op. 82
Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Sir Edward Elgar was the man whose splendid work finally laid to rest the belief that England was somehow an unmusical country. He was the son of an organist who provided him with most of his musical education, and he too became a talented organist and orchestral violinist. His earliest professional engagements were as music teacher at a school for the blind and then as conductor of an orchestra of mental hospital patients. From these modest beginnings came the masterful composer of oratorios, symphonies, concertos and the great Enigma Variations. He became the very model of the Edwardian artist-gentleman, and in 1904 he was knighted.
The First World War was a grave lime for him, during which he wrote only patriotic music and topical music about England and her allies. In 1918, as the war came to an end, he settled in a country cottage atop a wooded hill in Sussex, where, for the first time since his youth, he wrote chamber music. These late works are set for three classic instrumental combinations. They are his String Quartet, Piano
Quintet and this Sonata. In 1919, he composed his Cello Concerto, and though he lived fifteen years longer, he wrote no more.
The Violin Sonata is the most lyrical and leisurely of the three compositions, a work that can be most easily described as Brahmsian--drawn out with consummate skill--although to do so is not altogether just to either composer. Since the violin was Elgar's instrument, the writing is comfortably idiomatic, even where it is difficult. Some of the Sonata's musical material may have originated earlier, but it was written between March and September, 1918, and was first performed in public by the violinist W. H. Reed, a close friend of the composer, on March 21, 1919. The published score has a heading, "M.J. 1918," in memory of another old friend, Marie Joshua, who died shortly before the work was finished. A slow section near the end of the last movement is probably an observance of this loss.
The direct and compelling first movement, Allegro, is laid out in classical sonata-form. Its themes are broad and widely spaced, but smoothly spun and lightly textured. Next is a Romance, Andante, in a simple, three-part song form, with a mysterious, vaguely Spanish flavor in its broken chords. The third movement, Allegro non troppo, is again in sonata form, this lime with a more extended development.
La fille aux cheveux de tin
Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Although Debussy resisted the impressionist label, his music has come to be associated with the aesthetics of the impressionist painters of his time, thanks in part to evocative titles such as LajiUe aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, 1910). Although the piece belongs to the composer's set of Preludes for Piano, it is often performed in transcription for violin and piano.
Zigeunenveisen, Op. 20, No. 1
Pablo de Sarasate (18H-1908)
r ablo Martin Meliton Sarasate y Navascuez is the full name of the Spanish iolinist who was one of the great virtuoso-composers of his time. When Queen Isabella of Spain first heard him play, as a ten-year-old boy, she generously presented him with a Stradivarius violin and subsidized his studies at the Paris Conservatory. He
made his home in France for most of the rest of his life, but an annual visit to Spain was always part of the touring itineraries that took him almost everywhere in Europe and the Americas. Saint-Saens, Bruch and Lalo were some of the composers who wrote concertos for him, and it was Lalo's Symphonie espagnok that gave Tchaikovsky the idea for his intensely national Violin Concerto.
George Bernard Shaw, writing as a music critic in London in the 1890s, said that Sarasate played with "a quiet and certain mastery" and with "exclusive attention to the absolutely musical side of his classical repertory." This is testimony enough to the serious, artistic aspect of Sarasate's career. In addition, he was a brilliant virtuoso with a repertoire of dazzling showpieces, among which were many original compositions flavored with recollections of the folk songs and dances of Spain. This one is a medley of gypsy songs, six of them in suddenly contrasting fast and slow tempos, like the Hungarian Rhapsodies that Franz Liszt based on gyspy songs from his native country. It is usually known by the German title of its first edition, Zigeunerweisen, which means "Gypsy Tunes." An orchestrated version of the accompaniment calls for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets and timpani, and triangle and strings.

About the Artists
With the start of the 199293 Season, Midori began the 10th year of an extraordinary international career, which was launched with her brilliant New York Philharmonic debut under Zubin Mehta at its 1982 New Year's Eve gala concert. To mark this anniversary she relumed to the New York Philharmonic for a series of subscription concerts conducted by Music Director Kurt Masur. Her current American recital tour takes her to such cities as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, St. Paul and Kansas City and culminates at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City on her twenty-first birthday.
This season she will also make three major orchestral tours: of Great Britain with the London Symphony Orchestra, of Germany with the Orchestre National de France, and of India with the London Philharmonic. Her European recitals will include performances in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, Naples and Milan, among many other cities. In North America, she will appear in the spring of 1993 with the symphony orchestras of Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, and St. Louis. She also plans a tour of Japan for June of 1993.
In past seasons, Midori has shared the great concert stages of the world with such eminent artists as Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Yo-Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Mstislav Rostropovich, Isaac Stem, Michael Tilson Thomas and Pinchas Zukerman, and with such prestigious ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, l'Orchestre de Paris and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Midori is heard exclusively for Sony Classical, which has issued her live recording of the Dvorak Violin Concerto with Zubin Mehia and the New York Philharmonic, as well as the complete Paganini Caprices, and the two Bartok violin concertos with Mehta and the Berlin Philharmonic. Midori's triumphant Carnegie Hall recital debut of October 1990 is now available in both audio and video formats (including laserdisc and VHS cassette) and is scheduled for broadcast over the Arts & Entertainment Network in early 1993. Planned for
release this season is an album of virtuoso encore pieces. Her first recordings, made at ages 14 and 15 for Philips, included concert works of Bach, Vivaldi, Paganini and Tchaikovsky.
Midori's unique talents and lively personality have made her one of the most popular figures in the music world. She has received wide recognition in the media, and her television appearances have included the 1992 Winter Olympic Games telecast, the "Today" Show, "The Tonight Show," "Good Morning America," "CBS Sunday Morning," "The MacNeil-Lehrer Report," CNN's "Futurewatch" and "Nova," as well as programs on the television networks of France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Midori was bom in Osaka, Japan in 1971 and began studying the violin with her mother, Setsu Goto, at a very early age. In 1982 she came to New York where she studied with Dorothy DeLay, Jens Ellermann and Yang-Ho Kim. When Zubin Mehta first heard her play, he was so impressed that he invited her to be a surprise guest soloist on the New York Philharmonic's traditional New Year's Eve concert, an occasion on which she received a standing ovation and the impetus to begin a major career.
Midori currently lives in New York City. She plays the 1722 "Jupiter" Stradivarius.
Her only previous appearance in Ann Arbor was in the 1991 May Festival. For her performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur, she was hailed by the Ann Arbor News as "a wonderful musician.... a soloist with so much musicality yet so little ego."
In the past several years Robert McDonald has distinguished himself as the recipient of a number of prizes, both in this country and abroad. Winner of the Gold Medal at the Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy, he also won the top prize at the University of Maryland International Piano Competition. In addition, he was the recipient of the National Federation of Music Clubs Artist
Award and the winner of the Washington International Competition for Pianists. In 1988 he was honored with a Solo Recitalist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Mr. McDonald has concertized extensively as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestras throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe. He has been a participant at the Marlboro, Caramoor, Lucerne, Bergen, Besancon and Montreux Festivals; toured nationally with Music from Marlboro; and has been a guest artist with the Juilliard, American, Fine Arts and Orlando Siring Quartets.
A magna cum laude graduate of Lawrence University, Robert McDonald continued his studies at the Curtis Institute with Rudolf Serkin, Seymour Lipkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski; at the Manhattan School of Music with Gary Graffman; and at The Juilliard School with Beveridge Webster. He is currently a member of the piano faculty at the Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music and, during the summer, is the director of keyboard programs at the Taos School of Music and Chamber Music Festival in New Mexico.
Mr. McDonald has recorded for the Vox Cum Laude, Musical Heritage Society, Bridge, Sony Classical and CRI labels.
