PROGRAM NOTES
A note from the conductor
Sousa never spoke at his concerts, preferring nonstop music that spoke for itself. But sixty years since his death, a bit of explanation is in order.
During the 1976 bicentennial celebrations, America's musical history came of age. America has become delighted and finally at ease with Scott Joplin, Stephen Foster, Charles Ives and even brass bands. Once we believed that culture from Europe was far superior to our home grown product; now we have reached a maturity that allows us to look realistically at "the way we were." What we find is an exuberant, naive, athletic and uninhibited folk-art music, portraying a nation bursting with strength, humor, vitality, and unabashed sentiment. The music and extraordinary history of John Philip Sousa and his band embody these values.
Sousa was a superb musician, organizer, businessman, showman, and writer. Known for his dry wit, he always had a twinkle in his eye, although he seldom smiled. In fact, his only documented laughter occurred at a band baseball game when one of the players bent over and split his pants.
Today we think of Sousa as a legendary composer of military marches, but in his own time he achieved renown as a composer of dance music. When the Washington Post March was written in 1889, the popularity of the waltz was already giving way to a new craze called the two-step. Dancing instructors discovered that the lilting strains of the Washington Post were perfect for this new dance, and Sousa was catapulted to world-wide fame.
Sousa's role in promoting classical music is also far less known than his work as a composer and performer of marches. At the time he became a conductor of the Marine Band in 1880, the only symphony orchestra then existing was the Boston Symphony. To his musicians, a position with the Sousa Band was the pinnacle of their profession. Sousa often recruited the finest orchestral players from Europe. Judging from early recordings and contemporary accounts, the band was among the
finest musical organizations of any kind in America.
During his career, Sousa introduced millions of Americans to the "new" music of Wagner, Verdi, Richard Strauss, Respighi, and Tchaikovsky, as well as the works of such relatively older masters as Rossini. Although he regarded himself as an entertainer, his influence as an educator of popular taste should not be underestimated. His career was a model and inspiration for Arthur Fiedler, whose career with the Boston Pops began at the end of the Sousa era.
Sousa's compositional output was enormous--15 operettas, 136 marches, 11 suites, 77 songs and vocal works, 63 miscellaneous compositions, 322 known arrangements, 7 books and 132 articles. Two of his best operettas, El Capitan and the Free Lance have enjoyed recent revivals.
The music to be performed on this evening's program is a retrospective of Sousa's 50 years of concerts and features elements common to all of them: classical works by European composers, virtuoso instrumental solos; selections from his suites, operettas, and novelties; vocal arias sung by a lovely soprano; and of course the splendid Sousa marches. The instrumental solos were often composed by his famous cornetist Herbert L. Clarke and trombonist Arthur Pryor.
Sousa's unprecendented success as a popular musical entertainer was based on three elements: his compositions, his musicianship and his
showmanship. Through musical research and dramatic portrayal, these modern Sousa concerts seek to reunite the man and his music. The program provides a glimpse of an age when Sousa's concerts exemplified the honest values, robust optimism and rollicking beat of a young and vital society. 1 hope you will enjoy it. --Keith Brion
John Philip Sousa: A brief biography
John Philip Sousa personified tum-of-the-century America, the comparative innocence and brash energy of a still new nation. His band performed across the globe and brought music to hundreds of American towns. Born on November 6, 1854, Sousa reached his exalted position with startling quickness. In 1880, at age 26, he became conductor of the U. S. Marine Band. In 12 years the vastly improved ensemble won high renown, and Sousa's compositions earned him the title of "The March King." The formation of his own band in 1892 brought world-wide acclaim.
In its first seven years the Sousa Band gave 3500 concerts in 400 cities. In an era of train and ship travel, it logged over a million miles in nearly four decades. There were European tours in 1900, 1901,1903 and 1905, and a world tour in 1910-11, the zenith of the band era. Even in the remote Fiji Islands, recordings of Sousa's music preceded him, assuring an ecstatic reception.
The unprecedented popularity of the Sousa Band came at a time when few American orchestras existed. From the Civil War to about 1920, band concerts were among the most important features of American musical life. No finer band than Sousa's was ever heard. Sousa modified the brass band by decreasing the brass and percussion instruments, increasing its woodwinds, and adding a harp. Sousa's conducting genius attracted the finest musicians, enabling him to build an ensemble capable of executing programs almost as varied as those of a symphony orchestra. The Sousa Band became the standard by which American bands were measured, causing a dramatic rise in quality around the country.
Sousa's compositions also spread his fame. Such marches as The Stars and Stripes Forever, El Capitan, Washington Post, and Semper Fidelis are
widely acknowledged as the best of the genre. Sousa said a march "should make a man with a wooden leg step out," and his surely did. Although he standardized the march form as it is known today, he was no mere maker of marches, but an exceptionally invented composer of over 200 works, including symphonic poems, suites, operas and operettas. His principles of instrumentation and tonal color influenced many classical composers. His robust, patriotic operettas of the 1890s helped introduce a truly native musical altitude in American theatre.
First-rate salesmanship was a key to his success. Sousa pleasingly packaged classical standards and orchestral treatments of popular fare, establishing a standard style for pops concerts of American symphonies. His band played Parsijal excerpts ten years before the work was introduced at the Metropolitan Opera, yet combined it with such fare as "Turkey in the Straw," ultimately doing more to champion good music than any American orchestra of the era. Sousa astounded Europe by introducing ragtime on his 1900 tour, touching off a fascination with American music that influenced such composers as Ravel, Stravinsky, and Milhaud.
The principal commodity Sousa sold was pride in America and American music. Due to his efforts, American music won world acclaim for the first time. A popular tale promoted by Sousa's press agent speculated that Sousa had changed his original name of "So" by adding USA, the initials of his beloved country. In fact, Sousa was of Portugese descent and kept his exact name.
For decades Sousa's visits were special events for America's cities. Invariably his arrival was met by an assemblage of high school bands, the mayor, and all manner of dignitaries. Before performing he would briefly conduct the city's combined high school bands. Receptions were held in his honor he was asked to speak on the radio, and he was given the key to the city.
Before radio, improved electronic records, and finally, the advent of talking pictures, the Sousa Band was one of America's greatest musical attractions. From his first national tour in 1891 to his last performance in 1932, Sousa and his band were famous for their musicality, topicality, swift pace, and joyous spirit. In America's golden age of bands, the Sousa Band was pre-eminent.
Seeley-Deer Inaugural Gown Collection
In 1992, Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Deer donated the Seeley-Deer Inaugural Gown Collection to the University Musical Society. Some of these gowns are wom by models in tonight's performance. Each is an accurate replica of the inaugural gown worn by America's First Ladies. They represent the only collection of inaugural gown replicas in the country. The original gowns are displayed in the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, the collection includes gowns and crowns of six foreign queens.
In order to create the gowns, Mrs. Deer obtained permission from the Smithsonian to make detailed sketches from which dress patterns could be made. Designers were hired to complete this task and to search for materials necessary to accurately reproduce the gowns.
Each gown is symbolic of the time period when it was worn and is a statement of each First Lady's personality. Often the gown worn by a First Lady would set the style trend for an era such as hoop skirt worn by Angelica Van Buren or the Empire style gown worn by Dolly Madison. They offer a unique historical view of some of the most well-known women in America.
Tonight's gowns include: Francis Folsom Cleveland, 22nd and 24th First Lady, 1885-1889; Caroline Scott Harrison, 23rd First Lady, 1889 -1893; Edith Carow Roosevelt, 26th First Lady, 1901 1909; Helen Herron Taft, 27th First Lady, 1909 1913. The Inaugural Gown Collection may be rented from the University Musical Society. Please call 313.764.8489 for more information.
