Robert Schumann Widmung (Riickert)
Mein guter Geist, mein besseres Ich!
Meine Rose (Lenau)
Dedication
You my soul, you my heart, You my bliss, O you my pain, You my world in which I live, my heaven you, to which I float,
0 you my grave, into which my grief forever I've consigned. You are repose, you are peace,
you are bestowed on me from Heaven. Your love for me gives me my worth, your eyes transfigure me in mine, lovingly you raise me above myself, my good spirit, my better self!
M Rose
To spring's lovely jewel, to the rose, my delight, bowed and made paler by the sun's torrid beam,
1 bring water in this beaker from the deep well.
You, rose of my heart, by pain's secret beam are you bowed and made paler; would I might at your feet, as water to this flower, silently pour forth my soul! Even though I might not then see you rise again.
The Sultry Evening
The dark clouds hung so oppressive and heavy; we were walking sadly in the garden together.
So sultry and silent,
so overcast and starless
was the night, so like our love,
fit only for tears.
And when 1 had to go
and bade you goodnight
I found it in my anguished heart
to wish us both dead.
You are like a Flower
You are like a flower,
so sweet and fair and pure;
at you I gaze, and melancholy
steals into my heart.
I feel as if my hands
I ought to lay upon your head,
praying that God preserve you
so pure and fair and sweet.
Spring Night
Above the garden across the sky I heard the birds of passage wing, a sigh that spring is in the air, that blossom time is come.
I could shout for joy, could weep, I feel it cannot be. Old wonders reappear, with the gleaming moon.
And the moon and the stars say it, and the wood, dreaming, murmurs it, and the nightingales sing it: she is yours, she is yours!
II
Richard Strauss
Ruhe, meine Seek (Henckell)
Ruhe, ruhe, meine Seele,
Deine Stiirme gingen wild
Hast getobt und hast gezittert,
Wie die Brandung, wenn sie schwillt.
Diese Zeiten sind gewaltig, Bringen Hen und Him in Not -Ruhe, ruhe meine Seele, Und vergiss, was dich bedroht!
Meinem Kinde (Falke)
Jeder behutsame Atemzug
1st ein schweifender Himmelsflug,
1st ein Suchcn weit umher,
Ob nicht doch ein Sternlein war,
Rest, My Soul
Not even a breeze gently stirs, quietly asleep the grove rests. Through the dark cover of the leaves steals the bright sunshine.
Rest, rest my soul,
your storms went wild.
you have raged and have trembled
like the surf when it swells.
These times are overwhelming,
they bring heart and head to distress -
rest, rest my soul,
and forget what threatens you.
To my Child
You are asleep and gently I lean over your crib and bless you.
Every careful breath
is a roving flight to heaven,
is a search far and wide
for any little star there might be
die Konige zogen weiter;
Alles Lebens, alles Lichts
Und was wissen von derselben,
Ich und ihr und alle Nichts! Nichts!
on which from pure brilliance and light love plucks a lucky herb which it carries down on swift wings and lays on your white coverlet.
You are asleep and gently I lean over your crib and bless you.
The Holy Three Kings from the Orient
The holy three kings from the Orient, they asked in every small town: "Where goes the way toward Bethlehem, you dear boys and girls"
The young and old, they knew it not, the kings travelled on. They followed a golden star, that shone lovely and bright.
The star stood still over Joseph's house, there they entered in; the small oxen lowed, the baby cried, the holy three kings sang.
Homecoming
The branches wave gently, the boat moves quickly to the shore, home to its nest the dove goes, home to you, comes my heart.
Too long, by shimmering day, amidst the clamor of life, on fluttering wings it has flown afar.
But now the sun has departed and silence descends on the woods, my heart feels; at your side is peace, with you alone, is rest.
Nothing
You say I should name her,
My queen of the realm of song
What fools you are,
I know her less than you!
You ask me the color of her eyes,
You ask me about the sound of her voice,
Ah, what do I know of that!
Is not the sun the source
Of all life, of all light
And what do we know of it,
I and you and everyone Nothing, nothing!

Thanksgiving
The sky,
And the water which follows
the changes of the clouds, And the earth, and the mountains,
ever-waiting,
And the light which transforms. And an eye near my eye,
a mind near my mind, And a face which smiles and
weeps with mine, And two feet behind my feet As the wave blends into the wave. And a soul,
Invisible, full of love and immortality, And a garment of flesh and blood
which will spring forth for the resurrection, And Truth, and the Spirit, and Grace
with her luminous inheritance. All that, you gave to me. And you also gave yourself, In the submission and blood of
your Cross, And in a bread sweeter than the
coolness of the stars, My God. Alleluia, alleluia
Landscape
The lake like a big, blue jewel, The road full of sorrows and
pot-holes,
My feet faltering in the dust, The lake like a big, blue jewel. And there she is, green and blue as
the landscape! Between the corn and the sun, I can
see her face: She smiles, with her hand over her
eyes, The lake, like a big, blue jewel.
The Wife
Go whither the Spirit shall lead you,
No one can put asunder what God has put together,
Go whither the Spirit shall lead you,
The wife is the extension of the husband,
Go whither the Spirit shall lead you,
As the Church is the extension of Christ.
Le collier
Printemps enchain, arc-en-ciel

Ah! mon collier! Ah! mon collier!

Donnez-moi votre Grace! Carillonne, mon coeur! Que ta resonance soit dure, et longue,
et profonde!
Frappe, tape, choque pour ton roi! Frappe, tape, choque pour ton Dieu! Voici ton jour de gloire et de

The necklace
Fettered Spring, light rainbow of
the morning,
Ah! my necklace! Ah! my necklace! Small living support of my weary ears, Necklace of renewal, of smiles and of grace, Oriental necklace, choice and
many-colored necklace with its hard
and droll pearls! Curving landscape, espousing the
fresh air of the morning, Ah! my necklace! Ah! my necklace! Your two arms around my neck, this morning.
Granted prayer
Shake up the lonely one, the old
mountain of sorrow, May the sun work over the bitter
waters of my heart! O Jesus,
Living bread, you who give life, Say but one word, and my soul
shall be cured. Shake up the lonely one, the old
mountain of sorrow, May the sun work over the bitter
waters of my heart! Give me your Grace! Ring out, my heart! May your peals resound hard, and long
and deep!
Hit, knock, clang for your king! Hit, knock, clang for your King! Here is your day of glory and
resurrection! Bliss has come back.
A note on this evening's program...................by Richard LeSueur
As we look at Miss Norman's selections for this evening's recital, it may not be readily apparent what form unifies the program. However, a careful reading of the texts of each group of songs makes it clear that each will deal with one aspect of love.
Many of Schumann's greatest songs were written during his courtship and the early days of his marriage to Clara Wieck. These songs display the overt passion of the romantic poetry linked to a composer well attuned to these emotions and ideals. The five songs of R. Strauss concentrate on the more domestic side of love. Although Strauss is usually thought to write on a grandiose and elaborate scale, in many of his songs we find a more intimate and contemplative side of his nature.
The second half of this evening's recital presents a cycle based on five Greek folk songs. These are earthy songs in which Ravel highlights the sensual, secular love of a simple peasant. The folk elements of the texts and the melodies are shown in sharp contrast to the sophistication of Ravel's music, although the music never overwhelms the text. The five selections from Messiaen's "Poemes pour Mi" show the same love but clothed in a spirituality are quite evident in this tribute to his wife. Although rarely performed, these songs show that the romantic tradition remains even as the musical speech changes.
About the Artists
"Art on nature's scale, at once grand and intimate," is how one reviewer aptly described the vocal phenomenon that is Jessye Norman. Whether portraying operatic hero?ines, interpreting lieder or appearing with the world's premier orchestras and conductors, her exquisite artistry invariably enthralls capacity audi?ences across the globe.
Distinguishing her 1993-94 sea?son are guest appearances with the London, Boston, San Francisco, To?ronto, Houston and Chicago Sym?phony Orchestras (the latter for Bluebeard's Castle conducted by Pierre Boulez); a "Live from Lincoln Center" telecast with the Orchestra of St. Luke's; and recitals in Florida, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, St. Paul, La Jolla, Seattle, Tucson, Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Co?logne, London, Paris, and Barce?lona.
1992-93 season highlights included performances as Jocasta in Japan's Saito Kinen Festival production of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex conducted by Seiji Ozawa; a return to the Metropolitan Opera for both Sieglinde in Die Walkiire and the title role in a new production of Ariadne auf hlaxos; Das Lied von der Erde with James Levine and the Berlin Philharmonic [to be realeased on the Philips label]; Erwartung with Pierre Boulez and the London Symphony; Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder with James Levine and the Berlin Philharmonic [to be released on the Philips label], Strauss' Four Last Songs with Sergiu Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic; Das Lied von der Erde with Edo de Waart and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and La Mart de Cleopdtre with Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic. She toured extensively in the 1970s, performing throughout the United States, South America, Australia, Canada, and Europe.
Jessye Norman has sung a widely varied operatic repertoire at La Scala, Milan; the Teatro Comunale, Florence; the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; the Stuttgart Opera, Vienna and Hamburg State Operas, Opera Company of Philadelphia, and Aix-en-Provence Festival. Her Metropolitan Opera debut, in Berlioz' Les Troyens (in which she sang both Dido and Cassandra) opened the Met's 100th anniversary season in 1983. At the Met her roles have included Jocasta
in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, the title role in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, Madame Lidoine in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites, Kundry in Parsifal and Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhauser. During 1988-89 she made company history appearing in the company's first presentation of a one-character opera, Schoenberg's Erwartung, a Live from the Met telecast that also featured her as Judith in Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. During 1990-91 Miss Norman opened the Lyric Opera of Chicago's season in Robert Wilson's critically acclaimed production of duck's Alceste.
In addition to her Live from the Met and Live form Lincoln Center appearances Miss Norman is known to television audiences worldwide for her two Christmas specials: )essye Norman at Notre Dame (telecast in Christmas 1992) and Christmastide (a Thames Television and PBS joint production telecast in 1987), and for the film, Jessye Norman Sings Carmen, a documentary chronicling her recording of the Bizet opera, released in 1990. In 1993 P.B.S. telecast the Saito Kinen Festival's electrifying production of Oedipus Rex conducted by Seiji Ozawa and featuring Miss Norman as Jocasta. Other recent P.B.S. telecasts include Miss Norman with Kathleen Battle, James Levine, and members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and chorus in a Spirituals Gala at Carnegie Hall, and Sieglinde in Wagner's Die Walkiire, filmed as part of the company's complete Ring cycle. Millions worldwide saw her sing the Marseillaise at the spectacular Bastille Day festivities celebrating the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution in July 1989.
Miss Norman has been presented many prestigious awards and distinctions, including honorary doctorates from Howard University, the University of Michigan, the Boston Conser?vatory, the University of the South, Sewanee; Brandeis University, Harvard University, Cambridge University, the American University of Paris, the Juilliard School, Yale University, Western New England College, Kenyon College, Paine College (Augusta, Georgia), the New School for Social Research (New York City), LaSalle University (Quebec), Amherst College, Spelman College, Dartmouth College, and the University of Edinburgh. She was also a recipient of the 1990 Albert Einstein College of Medicine Annual Achievement Award. In 1984 the French Government invested Miss Norman with the title "Commandeur de I'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres." Also in 1984 the National Museum of Natural History in Paris honored her by naming an orchid for her. In November 1987 she became an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London. She is also an Honorary Fellow of Pierson College, Yale University, and Jesus and Newnham Colleges, Cambridge University. Miss Norman is a member of the Board of Trustees at Paine College in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia. In October 1989 she was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by French President Mitterand, and in June 1990 she was named Honorary Ambassador to the United Nations by U.N. Secretary Xavier Perez de Cuellar. Most recently she was winner of an "Ace" Award from the National Academy of Cable Programming for Jessye Norman at Notre Dame, and the Grand Prix at Japan's Symphony Hall 1992 International Music Awards.
One of the most distinguished and prolific recording artists of our day, Jessye Norman's recordings have won numerous awards, including the Paris Grand Prix National du Disque for albums of lieder by Wagner, Schumann, Mahler, and Schubert. She has also received the prestigious Gramophone Award in London for her outstanding interpretation of Strauss' Four Last Songs, the Edison Prize in Amsterdam, and recording prizes in Belgium, Spain, and Germany. In the United States Miss Norman's Grammy Award-winning recordings include Songs of Maurice Ravel, Wagner's Lohengrin and Die Walkiire, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Her long-standing association with Philips Classics continues with the release of her much-anticipated recordings of Schoenberg's Erwartung with James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the title role of Strauss' Salome, Seiji Ozawa conducting the Dresden State Orchestra. Other recent issues include Cavalleria Rusticana (Santuzza), Fidelio (Leonore), a Salzburg Recital with James Levine, Amazing Grace, Lucky to Be Me (her second anthology of popular songs) and Jessye Norman at Notre Dame. She has also recorded for Angel, EMI, CBS Masterworks, Decca, DG and Erato.
This is Miss Norman's seventh appearance under Musical Society auspices.
Ann Schein first came to prominence when Kapp Records brought out discs featuring the piano artistry of a previously unknown girl of 19 whose virtuso performances of Chopin Scherzi, Liszt and Scriabin Etudes, Bartok and Medtner Dances, and Rachmaninoff Concerti were described by critics as "incredible," "not to be believed," "the surprise sensation of the year." Recently she won similar raves for one of the most ambitious and important undertakings of the 1980-81 New York music season an extraordinary series of six concerts at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall called "Ann Schein's Chopin," in which she presented a representative sampling of the oeuvre of the greatest of all keyboard composers.
A native of New York, Ann Schein grew up in Washington, D.C. where she began her piano studies at the age of 5 with Glenn
Dillard Gunn, long-time music critic of the now defunct Washington Times-Herald, and his wife, and where she made yearly public appearances form the time she was 7. At 13 she entered the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore for advanced study under Mieczyslaw Munz. Later she was taken under the tutelage of Artur Rubinstein, who coached her privately for two summers in Paris and Lucerne, and Dame Myra Hess, with whom she worked in London.
Throughout her distinguished international career, Miss Schein has given annual recitals in most of the major cities of North and South America and Europe and has been soloist with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics and the symphony orchestras of Philadelphia, Chicago, and Cleveland, the BBC Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Halle Orchestra, the Hague Residentie, and other important orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic in association with such prominent conductors as Alfred Wallenstein, George Szell, Sir Eugene Goosens, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sir Colin Davis, Leon Fleisher, Jorge Mester, and James de Preist.
Her worldwide tours under U.S. State Department auspices including two tours of Russia under the Soviet-American Cultural Exchange have taken her to every continent and to over sixty countries.
In 1965 Miss Schein teamed up with actor Frederic March and his wife Florence Eldridge on a cultural mission to the Middle East and was credited with bringing a" "fresh breeze" into sold-out houses in Cairo and Alexandria at a time when Egypt's political relations with the United States were particularly strained. At Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes, she courageously made her way through a recital program hours following a devasting earthquake and in Saigon, she played a concert at the National Conservatory with unorthodox counterpoint provided by American howitzers positioned on the city's outskirts.
As president of the People-to-People Music Committee, Miss Schein has raised funds for the presentation of musical instruments to symphony orchestras in disaster-struck areas and has administered international educational exchange programs for gifted young artists. She has also served on the Advisory Panel reviewing possible grants for the National Endowment for the Arts, panels for the Artistic Ambassadors' current program for tours abroad. She has judged many major piano competitions including the Naumburg, Young Concert Artists, and the Seventeen-General Motors Competition.
A long-time champion of American composers, Ann Schein has introduced Elliott Carter's Piano Sonata to Latin-American audiences, performed music of Aaron Copland for the celebration of the composer's 75th birthday at Alice Tully Hall, and recorded works of Copland, Charles Ives, and Ned Rorem for a special U.S. music project on the Desoto label.
She is on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory and is an Artist-Faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival.
She now resides near Baltimore with her husband, Earl Carlyss, who for more than 20 years was a member of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet and is now Coordinator of the Chamber Music Department at the Peabody Conservatory. They have two daughters, Linnea and Pauline. Tonight's performance marks Miss Schein's UMS debut.

Thank You!
Great music happens through the University Musical Society because of the much needed and greatly appreciated gifts of UMS supporters.
The list below represents names of donors from August 1992 through August 1993. If an error or omission is noted, we sincerely apologize and would appreciate a call at your earliest convenience (747-1178).
The University Musical Society would also like to thank those generous donors who wish to remain anonymous
