In our 137th season, we continue to showcase traditional performances
alongside contemporary artists for an offering that is unlike anything
available in the Midwest. UMS grew from a group of local members of the
University and townspeople in the 1870s who gathered together for the
study of Handel’s Messiah. Led by Professor Henry Simmons Frieze and
conducted by Professor Calvin Cady, the group assumed the name The
Choral Union. Many Choral Union members were also affiliated with the
University, and the University Musical Society was established soon after in
December 1880.
Since that first season, UMS has expanded greatly and now presents the
very best from a wide spectrum of the performing arts: internationally
renowned recitalists and orchestras, dance and chamber ensembles, jazz
and global music performers, and contemporary stagework and classical
theater. Through educational programming, the commissioning of new
works, youth programs, artist residencies, and collaborative projects, we
continue to strengthen our reputation for artistic distinction and innovation.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
by Graham McLaren
It is said that Charles Dickens, along
with Prince Albert who introduced
the Christmas tree and the Christmas
card to Britain, helped to create our
idea of Christmas about 150 years
ago. If he did, it’s more likely that was
a by-product from the success of his
story, not its primary aim. Yes, it is set
at Christmas time and takes the form
of a fable or carol, but its contents
deal with social injustice and result in
a cry for change and direct action.
While it may be true that Dickens
wrote his story in 1843, the same year
in which the first-ever Christmas
card was created and sent, more
significant is that it was also the year
of the publication of a report by the
Children’s Employment Commission.
This report was a detailed and
damning account of the appalling
working conditions that children
suffered at the time, and so inflamed
Dickens that he started to write a
pamphlet called “An Appeal to the
People of England, on Behalf of the
Poor Man’s Child.” He abandoned it
when he realized he needed a more
popular form to reach the masses. So
he wrote the story of an old man with
a heart as cold as winter itself. He has
such a terrible night alone with his
conscience that he learns to treat his
fellow men and women with kindness,
generosity, and compassion, gaining
a reputation as a man who embodies
the very spirit of Christmas.
It is, however, the way Dickens writes
his vision of the world that leaves its
inky scratches on our memory. Even the
very best of Dickens’ illustrators such
as Cruikshank and Phiz can’t begin to

capture the grotesque characters that
haunt his work.
The challenge for us in creating this
production has been: how do we best
serve Dickens’ social and political
agenda, and at the same time create
the extraordinary atmosphere that
his story demands? It is this question
that guided us through the process
of creating this show, and led us, for
instance, to the use of puppetry for
the ghosts and visions, and our desire
to bring you close to the action by
surrounding you with the set.
In developing our version of this
enduring tale, we concentrated on
what I believe to be the very heart of
the story, where Scrooge asks The
Ghost of Christmas Present: “What
is that protruding from your skirts
— is it a foot or a claw?” The Ghost
responds with a warning that these
children are “Ignorance” and “Want”
and to “Beware them both, but most
of all beware the boy for on his brow
I see that written which is Doom.”
We wanted to challenge all notions
of sentimental stage and screen
adaptations of A Christmas Carol, and
so kept returning to Dickens’ writings
in an effort to be true to his appeal “on
behalf of the poor man’s child.”

Sean Garratt graduated with a first in
contemporary theater and acting from
East 15 Acting School in 2008. As a
performer he specializes in puppetry,
voice, and improvisation. He is co-deviser
and puppeteer on the award winning show
The Table (Blind Summit) which has been
touring for five years to over 25 different
countries. His other work as a puppeteer
includes the puppet opera Le Rossignol
(Blind Summit), The Magic Flute (Bregenz

Festival), and the London 2012 Olympic
Opening Ceremony. In improvisation he
has worked alongside Ken Campbell, been
a cast member of Animo (Improbable
Theatre), and performed twice at
Second City, Chicago. His theater work
includes Henry V, King Lear in OP (Passion
in Practice) at The Globe, and The Glass
Mountain (Trestle Theatre Company/tour).
His television work includes Professor
Branestawm, The Day They Came to
Suck Out Our Brains, and Timeless. Films
include Cygnus, Drunk on Love, The Trap,
and Zumbo for which Mr. Garratt received
an acting award in 2011.
Beth Marshall trained at the L’École
Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq,
Paris. Her previous work with the National
Theatre of Scotland includes Rites
and The James Plays (with Edinburgh
International Festival/National Theatre
of Great Britain). Other theater work

Henry Maynard trained at Mountview
Academy of Theatre Arts. His theater work
includes That Face (Royal Court); Faeries,
1984 (Blind Summit); War Horse (National
Theatre of Great Britain/London’s West
End); and Star Wars (Secret Cinema). Mr.
Maynard is a puppeteer, clown, and physical
performer. He devised and performed the
puppetry on Sir Paul McCartney’s recent
music video for Appreciate. He has worked
extensively with Complicite on Shun-kin
and Blind Summit, where he devised The
Table and 1984, in addition to building
puppets for productions such as The
Master and the Margarita (Complicite),
Puss in Boots (New York), 1984, and
Faeries (Blind Summit). He is the artistic
director of Flabbergast Theatre, which has
toured internationally with its show Boris
& Sergey’s Vaudevillian Adventure. He
recently devised and performed a one-man
clowning show titled Tatterdemalion which
toured to Australia and Edinburgh. He has
completed over 20 short films and four
feature films including Life Classes.
Benny Young’s previous work for the
National Theatre of Scotland includes Dear
Scotland, 27, The Wheel, Be Near Me, and
Six Characters in Search of an Author.

Jon Beales (musician/composer) is based
in Edinburgh and works extensively in
theater as a composer and musical director.
His previous work with the National
Theatre of Scotland includes Glasgow Girls
and A Sheep Called Skye. Most recently,
Mr. Beales has written music for The Effect
(Firebrand); James and the Giant Peach, The
Witches, and In My Father’s Words (Dundee
Rep); the latter was remounted in New
York after a Scottish tour. He has also been
musical director of A Little Night Music
at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. His musical
theater work includes Flora the Red
Menace, Sweeney Todd, Sunshine on Leith
(Dundee Rep); The Sundowe (Eden Court,
Inverness); The Secret Garden, Whistle
Down the Wind, Honk!, Into the Woods

CREATIVE TEAM
Graham McLaren (director and designer)
has been working in theater for over two
decades. In that time he has created work
ranging from totally improvised and
devised to classical texts. His productions
of European classics have been seen
in London’s West End, ancient Greek
amphitheaters, black box studios, and
on the main stages of national theatres
and major festivals across the world. He
established the internationally acclaimed
Theatre Babel, and during that period
also served as artistic director for Perth
Rep Theatre Scotland. He left Scotland
for a brief time to work as associate artist
for Necessary Angel Theatre Company
in Canada before being invited to join
National Theatre of Scotland as associate
director. In 2016 Mr. McLaren will become
joint director/CEO of The Abbey Theatre
Dublin.
Gavin Glover (puppet maker and director)
is the founding member of FaultyOptic
Theatre of Animation which toured its
surreal and unique adult puppet shows

around the world from 1988. In 2011
he became a freelance theater director,
designer, and maker specializing in
puppetry and visual theater for an adult
audience. He makes and helps to create
performance works which explore a
mixture of puppets, acting, clowning,
video, movement, and dance. His previous
work for the National Theatre of Scotland
includes The Tin Forest. He has also
performed at the BBC and designed for
Halle Theatre in Germany.
Paul Claydon (lighting designer) has been
head of lighting for the National Theatre of
Scotland for six years. His lighting designs
for the National Theatre of Scotland
include Uisge-Beatha Gu Leòr (Whisky
Galore), Rantin, Reasons to Dance, Long
Gone Lonesome, Wall of Death: A Way of
Life, Transform Fife, Aalst, Elgin Macbeth,
Project Macbeth, and Roam (with Grid
Iron). His work for Grid Iron includes
Leaving Planet Earth, Barflies, Tryst, Yarn,
Once Upon a Dragon, The Devil’s Larder,
and Fierce. Mr. Claydon was nominated
for “Best Design” for A Christmas Carol
at the 2012 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in
Scotland. Roam was nominated in the same
category in 2006 and went on to win “Best
Technical Presentation.”
Matt Padden (sound designer) is a sound
designer and engineer based in Glasgow.
Since 2008, he has been head of sound for
the National Theatre of Scotland, where his
designs include The Tin Forest, Long Gone
Lonesome, Wall of Death: A Way of Life,
and, as technical sound designer, Enquirer.
Other sound designs include Andromaque
(Òran Mór), Last Dream on Earth (Kai
Fischer/National Theatre of Scotland/ Tron,
Glasgow), Entartet (Kai Fischer/Vanishing
Point/CCA), Subway (Vanishing Point), and
Woyzeck (Corcadorca).

In its short life, the National Theatre of
Scotland has already earned a significant
national and international reputation for
its daring and originality. The National
Theatre of Scotland was established
in 2006 and has created over 200
productions. Being a theater without walls
and building-free, the Company presents
a wide variety of work that ranges from

tailored to the smallest performing spaces.

We’re delighted to have you with us for
this performance of A Christmas Carol,
which marks the 12th production we’ve
shared with audiences in the US, and
marks our return to Ann Arbor having
previously enjoyed a sell-out run of The
Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart in
2013. The National Theatre of Scotland
first came to the US in 2007, bringing
Black Watch, which followed the
experiences of Scottish soldiers in Iraq.
The response was extraordinary; on
its first visit it won a New York Drama
Critics’ Circle Award for “Best Foreign
Play” and played to packed houses
every night. Since then we’ve shared
some of our finest work with American
audiences who have come to know our
innovative, fearless, and theatrically
