UMS Night School: Constructing Identity

In our ongoing Night School series, UMS explores the dynamic quality
of how human and social identities are constructed and explored in this
season’s artistic program. How do artists’ personal identities inform their
work? Do audiences’ own identities shape what they see on the stage?
UMS Night School invites participants to discover the intersections of
performance and identity in music, theater, and dance, and to meet others
who share a similar interest. The Night School curriculum will include
attendance at and discussion of Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company’s
Untitled Feminist Show & Straight White Men, Tanya Tagaq, Taylor
Mac, and Camille A. Brown & Dancers Black Girl—Linguistic Play. These
90-minute classes combine conversation, interactive exercises, and lectures
with genre experts to draw you into the themes related to identity and
performance. Drop in to just one session, or attend them all. Events are free,
and no pre-registration is required.

WINTER 2016

In our 137th season, we continue to showcase traditional performances
alongside contemporary artists for an offering that is unlike anything
available in the Midwest. UMS grew from a group of local members of the
University and townspeople in the 1870s who gathered together for the
study of Handel’s Messiah. Led by Professor Henry Simmons Frieze and
conducted by Professor Calvin Cady, the group assumed the name The
Choral Union. Many Choral Union members were also affiliated with the
University, and the University Musical Society was established soon after in
December 1880.
Since that first season, UMS has expanded greatly and now presents the
very best from a wide spectrum of the performing arts: internationally
renowned recitalists and orchestras, dance and chamber ensembles, jazz
and global music performers, and contemporary stagework and classical
theater. Through educational programming, the commissioning of new
works, youth programs, artist residencies, and collaborative projects, we
continue to strengthen our reputation for artistic distinction and innovation.

This evening’s program is approximately 80 minutes in duration and will be
performed without intermission.

OF THE NORTH
Innovative vocalist Tanya Tagaq can
capture the most ethereal moments of
desire, or find the deepest, huskiest,
beating pulse with her voice and breath.
She can create a soundscape from
inhalation and exhalation, summon a
powerful emotion from the smallest
movement of lips, throat, lungs.
Her intense, evocative vocalizations,
based on Inuit throat singing
traditions, help reclaim the
controversial 1922 film Nanook of
the North. Ms. Tagaq, along with
percussionist Jean Martin and
violinist Jesse Zubot, perform a live
accompaniment to the film’s silent
images of life in an early 20th-century
Inuit community in Northern Quebec.
Working with composer Derek
Charke (whose “Tundra Songs” Ms.
Tagaq performed with the Kronos
Quartet), Ms. Tagaq employs exquisite
improvisations with traditional
roots, a style she has perfected
over a decade of performances on
major stages worldwide, as well as
with collaborations with everyone
from Björk (Ms. Tagaq joined her on
the Medúlla tour) to Mike Patton
(who contributed to her 2009 Junonominated album Auk/Blood).
Commissioned by the Toronto
Film Festival for their First Nations
Film Festival, Ms. Tagaq’s work with
Nanook and with Charke began
with a sonic exploration of the film’s
imagery, images that spoke deeply to
the vocalist. “The film expresses a lot
of what I’m thinking and feeling,” Ms.
Tagaq reflects. “It softened my anger
about some of the great difficulties
facing my community and put some

beauty in there. It’s so hard to capture
the absolute vastness of those places
with visual elements alone. You can
look at it, and it looks beautiful, but it’s
also spacious and terrifying. The sound
is very expansive. You can hear people
talking from so far away. A single duck
flying over you has the loudest sound
in its wings. I have it in me, because I
was born and raised up there.”
Drawing on her childhood on
Nunavut’s Victoria Island, and on
her mother’s memories of forced
relocation from film’s Northern
Quebec location, Ms. Tagaq’s sense
of the sound of the Arctic spaces
shown in the film transforms the
images, adding great feeling and
depth to what is a complex mix
of beautiful representations and
racially charged clichés. The film,
the world’s first major work of
non-fiction filmmaking, is rife with
contradictions: Its director, Robert
Flaherty, lived and worked with
Inuit for years, yet still included
staged scenes of buffoonery and
feigned Inuit ignorance of modern
accoutrements.
Nonetheless, Ms. Tagaq and Charke
found much worthy of exploring in
Nanook. Ms. Tagaq viewed the film,
improvising two interlocking parts
based on Inuit throat singing forms,
which usually involve two vocalists.
As she did, she experienced a wealth
of emotions, from pride to delight to
rage. “Initially I found it a hindrance
to adhere to the visual element and
not be totally free, but I like the
dimension it gave me,” Ms. Tagaq
notes, “and the ability that I have to

let the film be the film.”
Charke left Ms. Tagaq’s recorded
vocals intact, weaving in sounds he
collected during stays in the Arctic,
as well as using subtle processing
to enhance certain moments in her
voice. Live, Ms. Tagaq adds yet another
swath of sound, reacting once again
to the images and music laid down
with Charke. The layers that form
the soundscape echo the layers of
meaning that can be drawn from the
film itself, from its gorgeous scenes of
a very different Arctic a century ago,
and from its failings, when it devolves
into harsh stereotype.
“Everyone will take what they
want from it. I have no intention
of spoon feeding people what they
need to know,” Ms. Tagaq states. “Yet,
hopefully, via coaxing and innuendo
and emotion, I can elevate people’s
consciousness of Inuit culture, and of
culture in general. I can take a small
bite out of the underground racism
against Inuit and Aboriginal people. I
have faith that if people are educated
about what’s actually happening, and
if people believe, it can be fixed. But
you have to acknowledge the bad to
sprout the good.”

Scream. Grunt. Growl, groan. Flutter.
Quiver. Howl. Tanya Tagaq’s (vocals)
music isn’t like anything you’ve heard
before. Unnerving and exquisite, Ms.
Tagaq’s unique vocal expression may be
rooted in Inuit throat singing but her
music has as much to do with electronica,
industrial, and metal influences as it does
with traditional culture.
This Inuk punk is known for delivering
fearsome, elemental performances that
are visceral and physical, heaving and
breathing and alive. Her shows draw
incredulous response from worldwide
audiences, and Ms. Tagaq’s tours tend
to jump back and forth over the map
of the world. From a Mexican EDM
festival to Carnegie Hall, her music and
performances transcend language.
Ms. Tagaq makes musical friends and
collaborators with an array of like-minded
talents: opera singers, avant-garde violin
composers, experimental DJs, all cutting
edge and challenging. Ms. Tagaq’s albums
make for complex listening, but her string
of Juno nominations attests to her ability
to make difficult music speak a universal
tongue. She’s worked with artists as varied
as Björk, Fucked Up, Kronos Quartet, Mike
Patton, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
Her newest CD, Animism, won the
Polaris Music Prize in 2014 and a Juno
Award in 2015. The album was produced
by west coast shape-shifter Jesse Zubot
(Dan Mangan, Fond of Tigers) with
additional production by Juan Hernandez.
The record features Michael Red (Low
Indigo), a live programmer; percussionist
Jean Martin; and Belgian opera singer
Anna Pardo Canedo. For more information,

Jean Martin (percussion) is a drummer,
multi-instrumentalist, producer, and
key member of the field of creative
music in Canada. He has produced/
engineered over 100 recording projects in
countless musical styles. His network of
collaborators extends internationally. Mr.
Martin is also artistic director of Barnyard
Records, a vital contemporary label with
a diverse 40+ title catalogue. In 2004, he
was nominated for “Best Drummer” at
the National Jazz Awards, and won the
Freddy Stone Award for excellence in
contemporary music in Canada.
Jesse Zubot (violin) is one of those unique
musicians whose praxis spans multiple
genres and transcends contextualization
into an idiom. Mr. Zubot has worked with
artists as diverse as Destroyer, Mira Calix,
Dan Mangan, Stars, Mats Gustafsson,
Kelly Joe Phelps, and Hawksley Workman.
A multiple Juno Award-winning artist,
he contributes regularly to Vancouver’s
improvised music scene and tours
extensively with Tanya Tagaq. Mr. Zubot
produced Tanya Tagaq’s Polaris Prize
winning album Animism.
