Bold Women of Medicine
This book is written by Susan M. Latta and is in the children's department. It is one of the real treasures this library has because the information has been available for over 100 years in many cases but none of it has come close to being made public. The subtitle says everything: 21 Stories of Astounding Discoveries, Daring Surgeries, and Healing Breakthroughs, One of the best stories is about Elizabeth Kenny, who found her own treatment of polio over 100 years ago but was never accepted by the establishment of doctors and universities who were undoubtedly dismayed at her succcess in finding an actual CURE where they -- mostly men -- totally immobilized the children and sentenced them to a life of misery. She was only allowed to treat the officlal rejects and mostly she cured those who were given up on and said to have no hope. Rebecca Lee was a free African American woman born in Delaware in 1831. At first she worked as a nurse because she was not allowed to become a doctor and like ,many men and women in such caring positions had to use trial and error to help the "suffering of others". She became a "doctoress" in 1864. She worked for the Freedmen's Bureau with former slaves in Richmond. She was greatly respected in her community, especially because of her education that cleanliness was crucial to good health. Many had to be taught how to wash. But other male doctors claimed that the M.D. after her name meant Mule Driver. This kind of treatment was true for almost all of the women who are described in this book, The first discussed is Florence Nightingale who was sent by the British government to a hospital in Scutari, Turkey in 1854. She demanded that the government make major clean-ups, including the sewers, water, garbage, among other things. After the work was done, the death rate at the hospital for soldiers went from 60% to 1%.
