Instead of half the school crammed into the Craft Theater for a performance by a hired guest, forums decided how they would like to celebrate diversity before the 11:00 feast. SEED representatives were made available and were chosen by most forums to lead a story and discussion related to poverty and hunger around the world. Then the feast began, with over 20 different countries and cultures represented. After cleaning up [most of] the mess, students, staff and some alumni gathered and posed for an all school picture (at right) as Mike Mouradian leaned out of a 2nd floor window above the crowd. The school donated goods such as canned food, socks, and coats to the Salvation Army. The scene in the parking lot is constantly changing, with kids listen ing to music, playing sports, eating lunch, and basi cally just chilling. With all of these activites, walking from one end of the parking lot to the other can be quite an interesting experience. There's the usual hack circle, too absorbed in their game to notice your passing. But more important is the impending inches away from your head. With a quick glance to your right you might witness a near disastrous accident as an over confident student tries to be slick and squeeze their car into that too tight space. Mu sic is often in the air , whether its hip-hop beats flowing from cars or rhythms coming from a small impromptu drum circle. The Jetta, the Neon, the Pick-Up and the Van all bump beats as unique as the kids that drive them. The Anime Club is devoted to bringing the best and least seen anime to the public eye. It meets at lunch in room 307. Anime, short for Japanese animation, is considered by the Anime Club as something deeper than cartoons. "The themes are usually more serious, and there are shows for anyone and everyone!" SEED, Students Educating Each other about Discrimination meets at community twice a week to play games and discuss discrimination. The group is made up of people from all three high schools. SEED was founded by Commu nity students in 1988. SEED members travel to sixth grade class rooms up to eight times through-out the year. They teach the sixth graders the importance of equality and encour age them to keep an open mind. an c The Dance classes, supervised by instructor Deborah Sipos-Roe have been putting on many successful perfomances at Community. Deborah's classes have been particularly popular this year. Students find them to be a good form of aerobic excercise, and it gives them a chance to hone their dance skills. Students learn a variety of styles of dance, ranging from Modern to Ballet to Jazz. Deborah teaches two classes of dance, Dance Body and Beginning Dance. Dance class comes highly recommended by students. 91 Tom Dodd Twenty three years ago a small school called Earthworks merged with Community. The school was one-year older then Community and two of the teachers were integrated into the staff of the then six year old high school. One of those teachers was Tom Dodd. Special izing in Art and Political Science, Tom entered our school and began a career famous on the lips of every student who as ever crossed the path of one of his classes. He has taught Newspaper, Creative Problem Solving, 19th Century Architecture, and many other art classes. With an informal teaching style, he relates to students in a personal way not duplicated by any other teacher. The fact is Tom Dodd has taught a great variety of classes, and has done so without being intimidating. Instead he has made students feel that they were being enter tained by his animated lectures or his great heart- to-hearts after class. He is what makes us different from the larger homogeneous high schools where such a teaching style would be misunderstood. During one after- class conversation with Tom, he was asked if his career at Community had been worth his time. He replied, "it has been very rewarding." Communicator The Communicator, our school newspaper, led by Tom Dodd, is published weekly on an annual basis ever since it's first edition. The class is a loosely structured system where students govern themselves to create the unique style that has come to personify the Communicator. This is a popular class because of its easy going classroom environment and the increased respon sibility of meeting personal deadlines and keep ing track of individual porfolios. When asked to describe his experience working on The Commu nicator, a student commented, "while it was not an extremely difficult class, I found myself putting a great deal of effort into it. I was very satisfied with the results." Community's favorite newspaper differs in many ways from other schools in the style and subject matter that is covered. Inside the Communicator on any given day you could find stories involving anything from national current events to an editorial about Junior parking issues. The students are rarely censored in their opinions and are made to take full responsibility for anything they publish. The Communicator will be undergoing many changes, now that the original advisor Tom Dodd will be retiring. Tom Dodd presides over his last group of Communicator staff 92 Y E A R B From back: Andrea Coronil, Anna Looker, Rachel Kotzian, Julia Alvarez, Scott Meves, Justin Fitins, Ross Johnson, Dustin Steichmann, Jaime Madigan, Rachel Frey, Katy Hunsche, Carly Wallace, Koti Warner, Rhiannon Price, Karen Grimm, Elaine Headly.
