 COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL'S
THIRTY YEARS: A REFINED MADNESS

ith summer fresh in the student's minds, they Wfiled into St. Andrews Church, on a hot August Tuesday, for the first day of a brand-new year. The jazz band played welcoming songs, and students searched the room for familiar faces. As friends found each other in the mass of moving people, the crowd divided itself into laughing groups, talking about tropi- cal vacations and summer adventures. Finally, the students took their seats and listened intently as teach- ers were introduced, rules were set and instructions were given. When the assembly was over, the people made their way to forums, meeting the people they would be spending the next year of their lives with. Newly introduced people made their way to the front of the school, where the band Comatose Colin provided free music, and hot-dogs and chips were handed out by the counselors. The forums mixed, as friends joked together and looked for new faces, that would soon become old friends. Around eleven, people began to float away to enjoy the very last vestiges of summer,
before the year began.

At first glance, our "Speakeasy" was simpy a square of light on the side of a barn. The entry way was bare except for a rickety table and a man in a tuxedo waiting for our coats and tickets. After walking up a dark, narrow staircase, our eyes were greeted by a completely different sight. Soft light diffused within the large room, radiating from the balcony above, where finely dressed ladies and gentlemen played black- jack and roulette. On the dance floor below, couples dressed in fur and feathers boogied to the sounds of Glen Miller, Ja-Rule and, of course, the Time Warp. As the clock chimed midnight, we left in our limos, cars and minivans- souvenir martini glasses in hand- for impromptu trips to the Fleetwood Diner and other, unnamed, desti- nations.

The whole school meets outside, in the chilly weather. There are two urns, which at least three people clasp. They watch as the others jostle to be seen. The picture is taken and the chaos is frozen, all different people, in different poses and clothing. We're different, but that's just us.

It is of little consequence that our school hall ways are painted in such sterile gray, because within less than a week they are littered with an assortment of eight and a half by eleven inch posters which molt and shed and are reapplied throughout the year. The plain walls are a blank canvas for the magic marker expressions of Community High.

The blue cape lies alone on the ledge sprinkled with stars. Anywhere else it would be laughed at and stolen. It's owner spent hours, days, making it to be a shied of heaven, against the world. She's in class now, secure in the knowledge that when she comes back, her cape will be, perhaps not exactly where she left it, but waiting for her all the same.

The old kids sit in the little room with two offices and a secretary. Their eyes are glittering and they are laughing. They avoid thinking of college, but eventually it will get down to crunch time and the room will be quiet. The only sound will be of pen writing on paper. They will all finish and the noise of relief will fill the room.

Quandary
by Claire Siebers
I have not been to the library since the staff abolished their daily sale of muffins and hot chocolate. Belly full, I knew I was help- ing the broken books. I sponsored Oscar Wilde's "Claude", page torn and taped, corners dog-eared or just plain missing, for 50 cents a day. If we are to treat books as our friends, what better way to help them out? I sometimes wonder if it is a trade: literature on welfare or crumb-free shelves. I'd bet my last mocha that good writing can support itself.

iyear the Halloween celebration was hosted by the McGraw forum. After much debate over £* which activities to pick, they settled on a com- promise: they would do them all. Along with the tradi- tional, most original and best costume contests, the scream contest, the funniest (clean) joke contest, and the best pump- kin contest were held during lunch in the Craft Theater. These were emceed by, McGraw forum members, Maggie Downey and Jill Davis. In the hall in front of the theater, Halloween themed movies were shown throughout the day; such as The Nighmare Before Christmas and Young Frankenstein. At the end of the day, a brand new event occurred; students were given brown paper bags and allowed to trick-or-treat from forum to forum. After this ended the students were released to stuff themselves full of
sugar for the rest of the day.

Values to Live By in These Times
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; Ony light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate;
Only love can do that.
Hate multiplies hate,
Violence multiplies violence,
And toughness multiplies toughness In a descending spiral of destruction... The chain reaction of evil--
Hate begetting hate,
Wars producing more wars--
Must be broken,
Or we shall be plunged into
the darkness of annihilation.

ato hear the moving singer and activist Josh White Jr. perform in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day. At first people were skeptical, it was very cold out, but the Britner forum knew what they were doing when they chose Josh White Jr. to perform. In the tradition of his father- a renowned blues singer whose music transcended racial barriers in a time of inequalityijosh White Jr. delivered a message of peace. He began the show by speaking about his father and the times they sang together. Then, almost as easily as breathing, he flowed into a powerful a Capella rendition of "Amazing Grace." It was well worth the chilly walk to listen to his moving performance. When his guitar string broke during a rousing 60s ballad, he had the audience singing "Amen" while he smoothly replaced his g-string. When asked what one thing he was trying to accomplish Josh replied, "I want to influ- ence people to think, and not affect or change their psyche." Despite initial resistance to the idea, the music soon had everyone
clapping and cheering. Josh's awe inspiring songs put everyone in a mood of reverent contemplation and brought an uplifting perspective to the day.
