"A Neal Porter book."
"Amos McGee, a friendly zookeeper, always made time to visit his good friends: the elephant, the tortoise, the penguin, the rhinoceros, and the owl. But one day--'Ah-choo!'--he woke with the sniffles and the sneezes. Though he didn't make it into the zoo that day, he did receive some unexpected guests."--Dust jacket.

Found It! Loved It.

Ok, I only looked this up on the catalog to find the game code for the summer game - BUT I have read this book and thought, hey, well I'm here, why not write a review!
Somehow the cover made me expect a sad story, but there's nothing sad about this book. It's about friendship and being adorable. It's also about routine, which I loved.
I loved the whimsy of Amos' relationships with each of the animals in his care at the zoo and when he's a little under the weather, his friends show that they love him, and their daily routine, as much as he does. It's heartwarming, sweet, charming and other adjectives. Oh, please read it!

Beautiful book submitted by kpkozloff on August 28, 2018, 8:50am I was drawn to this book for the illustrations by Erin Stead, but I read it over and over to my kids for the story of gentle compassion. I also love that Amos is an older person, but the story and images have a very whimsical/childlike tone.
Excellent submitted by TLW1998 on June 25, 2022, 6:41pm A sweet story about a nice man who has some real friends who he cares about and who care for him.

Perennial favorite submitted by sarajowaycee on July 17, 2023, 12:07am This is now my go-to book for baby gifts, because my children have loved it so much!
A Modern Classic submitted by Meginator on July 31, 2023, 1:41pm With its simple story and detailed illustrations, this charming picture book has a classic feeling to it despite its relatively recent vintage. The plot is straightforward and shared with simple text that makes the book an excellent choice for reading aloud, with a few wordless spreads that also serve to move things along at a solid pace. The pictures use pops of color to create high-contrast images that emphasize the characters against the backgrounds, and the narrative has a nice sense of symmetry to it that emphasizes the give-and-take nature of true friendship. The book is built around a moral message about mutual care that arises naturally from the way that the story is presented, with hints of silliness that will especially appeal to young readers. This is a gentle, yet fun, book with a lot of depth to it despite its apparent simplicity.
