"With acerbic wit ... Shane Burcaw describes the challenges he faces as a twenty-one-year-old with spinal muscular atrophy. From awkward handshakes to having a girlfriend and everything in between, Shane handles his situation with humor and a 'you-only-live-once' perspective on life. While he does talk about everyday issues that are relatable to teens, he also offers an eye-opening perspective on what it is like to have a life-threatening disease"-- Provided by publisher.

Funny But Challenging
submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 1:27pm
Really interesting memoir by a 21 y.o. who has been in wheelchair since he was three, due to a horrible degenerative muscle disease (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). Burcaw is a funny dude, with a gift for story-telling, and he is very upfront about his challenges (the indignity of needing help urinating and pooping, losing his ability to do things with his arms, issues with sex, impending death, etc.).
There's a lot that would be good for older teens to read here - about getting bullied, the psychology of disability, some pretty awesome parents, etc.
