C.S. Luis is your pusher

The first book in this series is wonderful and imaginative. The following are still pretty good, but they get increasingly pushy on the religious front. By the end it just feels like I’m being yelled at by a priest, who is telling me to go to church.
The audio books are narrated by Patrick Stuart, who does a fantastic job, I recommend it.
Start with this one! submitted by crazypockets on February 5, 2012, 12:31pm ...Not "The Magician's Nephew." I don't understand why most publishers now are claiming "Magician" is the first in the series. I really don't think the author intended it that way, and I think it takes a lot of the magic out of the series if children read them out of order. There is such a thing as a "prequel," and it's so much fun to read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" first and then find out more about the origins of Narnia later in "The Magician's Nephew!"

Great even for a young child

I specifically re-read this with an eye toward reading it to my child and... he loved it (at age 6 1/2). Definitely a "keep reading! no, I don't want to go to bed!" kind of book. I love when I can find good literature that interests him, instead of the latest Bakugan chapter book.
I did occasionally have to stop and give historical context, or translate a term from the British use to English (a "torch" is a flashlight, e.g.). And while I remember the movie having long and violent battle scenes, those same scenes in the book are only 2 pages each, and not very violent even at that. An excellent and well-done book with enough action to interest a kid
Narnia! submitted by mtrax on August 1, 2014, 8:25am This is the best book in the series. I love to read the books in the order they are written, so I nearly always start with this one. I revisit them all every few years.
A classic submitted by hmarchan on June 27, 2015, 3:53pm I love this book! Same with my mom. It was definitely a page turner. When I found out I was reading it in school I was very excited because I knew my mom also loved this book.
very good submitted by Cory Michael on July 25, 2015, 11:41am Very good book and the movie is just as great (which doesn't happen often).
A creative read submitted by crankycrack on July 27, 2015, 11:12pm Enchanting and entertaining
Great submitted by ychun on July 13, 2017, 9:59am Good book
Jovial! submitted by terpsichore17 on July 24, 2017, 9:36pm The perfect introduction to Narnia, full of rich imagery and Jack's straightforward description. Ward's thesis that the book is suffused with the spirit of the sphere of Jupiter - true kingship, resplendent in its majesty - is certainly compelling.
Very Quaint And Good for all ages! submitted by Addie-Tussing on June 20, 2018, 7:56pm A very sweet introduction to the series. One of the best Narnia books, C. S. Lewis is an amazing writer. 10/10
GOAT submitted by ela on July 21, 2018, 10:51pm This is one of my favorite books of all time! There is something so captivating about Narnia and this story especially. Love sharing this now with my kids.
Classic submitted by zmclaugh on August 2, 2018, 5:30pm A classic beginning to this series. Fun!
Classic submitted by lstorc on August 6, 2018, 11:40pm Still a fantastic read!
Overrated submitted by if2byu on July 24, 2019, 9:23pm I just finished reading the entire Narnia series. This is by far the worst of the bunch. It's the classic start to the story (Though the chronological start is a more interesting read I thought...See The Magician's Nephew). I loved the stories that came after but did not like this as much as the others.
Old favorite submitted by majean on July 27, 2019, 3:42pm I first read these books in third grade, then again in high school. It's been a while since then, but I still love them. The third book is my favorite, though.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe submitted by abigailmurphy on July 29, 2019, 11:45am This is a WONDERFUL book. I have probably read it 10 times. It is about four children who find a entrance into the magical land of Narnia. I love it.

A wholesome classic submitted by amandasaurus on June 20, 2022, 12:20am Such a fun, whimsical read. The religious symbolism is obvious (which was the entire point), and easy to understand. It’s definitely appropriate for little kids and adults alike.
Classic! submitted by Abbie G. on July 9, 2022, 2:41pm A must read!

Worth rereading submitted by balin on July 17, 2024, 10:44pm Truly a book that is worth rereading.
Engaging for all readers submitted by lizgiessner on July 31, 2024, 4:14pm Of course, this is a classic and for good reason. I can only add that I thought it was wonderful to see reluctant readers (middle school age) really get into it!
Stands alone submitted by tlaberge on August 14, 2024, 8:09am If you don’t read any other book in the series, this one stands alone. It is such a wonderful story full of joy and imagination, with important lessons about trust, hope, and sacrifice. I loved it as a child but appreciate it more and more as I age.
