An autobiography

"Zami: a new spelling of my name" is the autobiography of African-American and openly-Lesbian poet Audre Lorde. She story begins in Harlem, where Lorde grows up working class with two sisters. Lorde is legally blind as a child, yet manages to learn to read before going to school, which upsets the nuns who are her teachers.
Lorde's parents are immigrants, so the family experiences a great deal of oppression, including the effects of segregation. Yet their culture is rich, as are the descriptions of her life and home.
