Absolutely Fantastic SciFi Series submitted by aklute on June 19, 2014, 12:24pm I picked this up because it has a quote from George RR Martin on the cover and I have to say that he has good taste! This book drew me in right away with all of the great characters. The plot is fast-paced and exciting. It's scifi for sure but the science takes a back seat to just a really good story. I would highly recommend this to any scifi lover!

Good, old-fashioned, pulpy. sci-fi fun submitted by -alex- on June 17, 2016, 9:27pm The best part of the books in the Expanse series is the degree of 'realism' employed in a sci-fi setting. There are no holodecks or transporter beams here. Almost all of the human tech is plausible, often painful and full of risk, and its use comes with tons of trade-offs for the books' characters.

The worst part of these books is that it draws some pretty tired old conventions out of the pulpiest of pulp genres. The weathered old private eye, the everynerd white-knight of a central character, the aspects drawn from modern horror... all of it is as tired and stale as possible.

Still a decent read though. If you're looking for an entertaining read that won't strain your brain, this is the book for you.

Wonderful series submitted by ishhewitt on July 15, 2016, 10:44am A great series to get into after finishing Wheel of Time.

Quality submitted by sydcha on August 2, 2019, 10:36pm This ‘space opera’ surpassed all my expectations. Science fiction can be very hit or miss, and this book was a bullseye, containing every component of a realistic fiction while pushing the boundaries of what humanity can achieve. 12/10 this book was incredible.

Wow submitted by ann arbor air on June 11, 2021, 7:18pm Great book I love this

really good sci-fi yarn submitted by berger_d on June 12, 2022, 6:34pm If you are a fan of science fiction, space operas, and great adventure stories with a touch of political intrigue, this is a good choice for you.

So good you can't put it down submitted by oshani on June 13, 2022, 2:51pm This is by far one of my favorite books. It takes a couple chapters to get going, but once you hit chapter 4 the book will grab you by your nose and pull you in.... I frequently found myself reading for multiple hours and going through a significant portion of the book when I only intended to read 2 chapters.

This book series isn't like Star Wars, but it's also not a book about the initial ventures into space. This is midway. It covers a time when people couldn't travel the stars, but instead could travel between planets. One big difference is that it uses hard sci-fi, meaning that it tries it's best to be realistic in how space travel would work (ships need to turn and burn in the other direction to slow down, pilots need to be wary of too much G force, etc.). For a sci-fi nerd like me it's amazing.

TLDR: Read this book and read the others in the series. Watch the shows. All of it is great.

Great Book Series submitted by dlfredrickson on August 2, 2022, 7:56pm This is a great series. Well written, and really enjoyable.

great book submitted by graytabby on August 7, 2022, 8:26pm it was truly spectacular, cover to cover. couldn't put it down! the sci-fi in this is awesome

Wonderful submitted by basketcasemom on August 16, 2022, 1:14pm Realistic hard Sci-Fi, mixed with fungus zombies, love stories and political gamesmanship. How can you beat that?

Come for the sci-fi, stay for the characters submitted by bahr on June 26, 2023, 4:00pm This book is so amazing. It really reads as a hard sci-fi story, though that label is a little debatable. Still, it’s plausible enough that it’s a fun ride.

The writing is top notch. Each character is so deep and maybe you don’t find them all fun but there’s plenty of favorites to go around.

I really appreciate the deep questions this book asks, but you could also ignore them and just enjoy the ride. Be careful. If you read this book, you’ll probably be hooked and end up reading all 9 books in the series!

Near future hard scifi brings the drama and the thrills submitted by martingehrke on July 7, 2023, 5:33pm You can't just classify this book as scifi or thriller or ?. It its a genre defining space opera that uses human relationships and drama to explore a near future scenario.
