Great, Just awesome submitted by xjasx on June 16, 2012, 11:41pm Great book, I could not put it down once I started reading it, I got told off in class so much because of that xD It shows what could be us in the future, separated but still together somehow, but it also shows how one thing could be the destruction of us all

Really Good! submitted by alumeng.ajl on June 24, 2012, 8:48am I couldn't put it down! Can't wait to read the sequel!

Good book! submitted by VmT on June 29, 2012, 1:58pm I enjoyed this book so much I couldn't put it down... finished it in a day!

Great submitted by LuckyDuck on July 6, 2012, 11:33pm Loved it! Couldn't put it down.

Amazing!!!!! submitted by saira29 on July 17, 2012, 5:38pm I loved it I recommend it!!!!!!!!! Couldn't put it down!!!!!

Better than Hunger Games submitted by tigerbeck on July 27, 2012, 1:33pm High anticipation drove me to diving into this novel before all my other books that I had to review. Since I read Divergent back in the late months of 2011 I can tell you that I wasn't very up to date on the characters and how the book ended. So when Veronica Roth picks Tris's story up right from the get-go, I was highly confused and lost for most of the beginning. Of course I knew who Four was who doesn't? but when talk of Caleb, Will, and Susan come up now and again, it took a while for Tris to explain to me again who these people, allowing for some clarity.

One thing that Insurgent kept shoveling out nonstop was action, tension, and anticipation. There was never a dull moment while reading and that's how I enjoy my books. During the beginning of the book, because of my lack of information towards what was really going on from the previous novel, I had my moments of start-stop reading and tended to put the book down after each individual chapter. But after I started to learn and remember who was who and what was what, the story picked up for me and I found myself loving the dystopian setting once more.

Tris, the mighty sixteen-year-old girl that she is, started to have some irksome characteristics about her. She's headstrong and brash when it comes to the dangerous and life-threatening, constantly arguing with Four. But there is some growth within her character and we can see how Divergence really breaks her personality into the three factions she has aptitude for: Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. Though Tris did irk me, I found her a strong, courageous, and reliable girl and that made her a kickass character in my book.

One thing I'm sure many people had said after reading the book was possibly along the lines of this: "HOLY COW WHAT?! WHAT IS LIFE? DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN? THE ENDING! THAT ENDING! OH MY GOD, PRAISE VERONICA ROTH ON HIGH!" And I couldn't agree more because those were literally the very words coming out of my mouth. The ending exploded in my face as has me dying to read book 3.

Final Summation: The beginning failed to really captivate me and left me frazzled until chapters upon chapters into the book. If you don't remember what happened in Divergent or who anyone was, I highly suggest a reread because it would be most helpful in remembering the characters and the lead up into Insurgent. And trust me, Insurgent is worth the read, the whole 525 pages because that ending made my head clock all the way around. Book three please come out sooner!

good submitted by lil steve on August 2, 2012, 8:50pm really deep

Flawed but entertaining submitted by yugure on October 22, 2012, 7:21pm Flawed and predictable, but still entertaining, and a quick read. A recommended go-to book for fans of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games.

Divergent is not, however, as well-crafted as The Hunger Games. I find Roth's world-building skills to be subordinate to Collins' (Roth doesn't paint her dystopian Chicago very vividly, and the logistics of how society and the city functions is foggy at best), and her plotting lacks depth and subtly. Tris and Four are the only characters that seem to get any substance (they are the two main characters, after all), yet I still found Tris unrelatable.

Amazing submitted by isadoades on March 3, 2013, 5:07pm I loved it. I bought it on an impulse even though I had no idea what it was about. It was the best impulsive thing I have ever done. I loved how the lead up to the choosing ceremony was small so it wasn't messing with your mind about what she would pick. The way it explained how people were and what the looked like was just amazing to me because there were no exact descriptions of each character. The only thing I would want to change about it is mainly how Tris is described. I love to get solid images of the main character and I felt like I didn't get as good of one as I hoped.

Now when I look at people I can kinda guess what faction their in. Like my brother is in Erudite and my Mother Candor or Abegation. My Dad Dauntless and me Dauntless or Amity. I love this book and would read it all over again if given the chance.

Really good submitted by shalinigurl on June 15, 2013, 11:44am All of my friends were bugging me to read this book. It is an amazing series that hooks you on. It is a lot like the hunger games with the science fiction distopian concept. It is a good book.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!! submitted by philiptv on June 20, 2013, 9:21pm I loved this book. I been hearing from a few peers that I must read this book. I finished it within 24 hours. I couldn't set it down! I can't wait to read the sequel!

Incredible submitted by Veroni2 on June 29, 2013, 6:01pm This is pretty much my favorite book ever and that says a lot since I read constantly. I tend to be picky with my books, but it makes me want to cry when people criticize this book because it was perfect. If I could only recommend one book, this would be the book. Please do yourself a favor and read it! Also, I'm super excited about the movie coming in March 2014....absolutely can't wait!
And the author has the same name as me which just makes it so much better.

Incredible submitted by Motomori on June 30, 2013, 3:25pm Incredible plot and storyline. Loved the characters. Move over Hunger Games and Twilight because this trilogy is has just beat you by a long shot!!!!!!!!!!!!

awesome submitted by urjasinha00 on July 1, 2013, 11:25am this is a really good book, a must read

good submitted by leett on July 4, 2013, 2:56pm This is the new Twilight, Harry Potter, and Hunger games. Teen girls love it.

Hunger Games meets Harry Potter submitted by marielle on July 5, 2013, 7:12pm Imagine a dystopian future where everyone was supposed to act exactly like the Harry Potter-eque house they'd been assigned to. Divergent is just that; children are tested and then placed into 1 of 5 groups with personalities and interestes they must adhere to.

A very entertaining book.

Love this book! submitted by ehm on July 9, 2013, 11:47am I really enjoyed this book! I couldn't put it down during the time that I was reading it. You have to read it!

Recommended submitted by emjane on August 9, 2013, 11:12am In a dystopic future, society is split into five factions with five different values--kindness, truth, selflessness, courage, and knowledge-- and when residents are 16, they have to choose with which faction they will align. When Beatrice discovers she is equally suited for three factions, she must make a life-defining choice.

Roth's action-packed page turner will draw in even reluctant readers, as the story and plot move forward from the very beginning. The first-person present tense narration gives the book a sense of urgency, and the unpredictable plot will keep readers engaged throughout. The book is reft with graphic descriptions of violence and death, so the faint-hearted or squeamish should steer away.

However, reading like a combination of The Hunger Games, and The Giver, Divergent is set to become a favorite of teen readers. Recommended.

Great book submitted by 23lisq on August 26, 2013, 10:17pm Great read

Great Book submitted by eagles on August 30, 2013, 7:39pm I love this book. Great read.

If you liked Hunger Games, you'll like Divergent submitted by VickyB77 on June 13, 2014, 11:07pm Another fantastic teenage "discover yourself"/coming-of-age novel in another dystopian society. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm sure it'll be great. Veronica Roth did a wonderful job with this one!

Great book submitted by Amber Kinder on June 14, 2014, 6:15pm This book was great. It's well written and completely transports you to a dystopian Chicago. I highly recommend it.

awesome submitted by ECReader on June 15, 2014, 2:13pm loved it

Honestly... submitted by DBJC on June 16, 2014, 9:15pm I've heard A LOT of stuff about this book before I read it. So, I jumped in thinking that it was going to be a good book. Now, I've read a lot of dystopian novels before, and this one was definitely a dystopian novel. Choosing ceremony, scary alternate reality, etc. I was actually very interested in the world that Roth created. The factions had specific characteristics that caused them to act the way that they do. The factions reminded me of humans and their opinions and what could or couldn't happen if they all came together. There would be war...and there is. That's the MAIN reason why I chose to continue reading it.

I actually didn't really care about Tris at all because I found the writing bland. The story is what gripped me, not the writing. At all. In fact I found myself annoyed at the prose so much because the prose sounded choppy at times. Sometimes enough to make the story uninteresting. So if you're passionate about decorative, elaborate writing, don't read this book. You'll be surely disappointed. If you're tired of dystopian novels with choosing ceremonies and stories about trying to fit in, then don't read this book. If you DO like The Hunger Games, then read it. You won't be disappointed.

I think this is the only book that I've read where I cared more about the world. I hope as I read the other two books I'll get a better feel of the factions. It's a pretty good premise, but with bland writing. But I would recommend this a good read for dystopian lovers.

AWESOME submitted by zhaomegan4350 on June 17, 2014, 2:30pm This book was a really good science fiction book!! Almost as good as the Hunger Games!!!

Excellent submitted by isaacbrooks on June 18, 2014, 10:17am This outdoes Unwind by far.

Awesome book submitted by foxridgect on June 18, 2014, 9:59pm This book is kind of like The Hunger Games, but it is much more predictable. However, it's still a good book and I recommend it.

unreal submitted by dillonac9 on June 20, 2014, 3:19pm i liked the book

Good submitted by Noahwebb on June 23, 2014, 6:15pm Its a good book!

Decent YA read submitted by Sunny29 on June 24, 2014, 12:28pm This book follows the trend of young adult dystopian novels, and does a pretty decent job. The plot moves quickly, characters are interesting if not predictable, and most important for a summer read, leaves you wanting more!

action-packed submitted by camelsamba on June 24, 2014, 8:35pm I really enjoyed the book, and the teaser chapters for the next one have lured me in. I'm concerned about the movie adaptation however - I fear they will focus on the violence (and perhaps the romance) at the expense of the ideas.

(After reading Insurgent and Allegiant, I must say that this was the best of the three. If you never get around to reading the others, you will be fine.)

good submitted by aparna70 on June 26, 2014, 5:19pm nice story.

Amazing submitted by nmmagolan on June 28, 2014, 2:31pm I wanted to read this book because i had seen the movie and wanted to compare the two. There were a few details in the movie that weren't present in the book. I love the main character of Tris and how her and Four help each other out. I would recommend this series to any young adult readers out there that want a challenge.

Awesome submitted by Lulu D on July 6, 2014, 3:46pm I love dystopian books like Divergent because i couldnt put it down!

amazing submitted by chioma on July 7, 2014, 9:20am Divergent is an amazing action packed book that everyone should read. It is a great story put into three books with everything that a story needs to be amazing. Everyone should read this book, if they don't they are truly missing out on something great.

Good submitted by Dannihu on July 8, 2014, 6:47pm Interesting book.

OMG submitted by grrrkg on July 12, 2014, 9:18pm BEST BOOK EVER

Best thing ever!! submitted by yslee on July 30, 2014, 2:26pm This book is really good!!
I love all the action in it, and you HAVE to read the other 2 books.:)

Excellent book submitted by ValerieL on August 13, 2014, 12:25pm I'd been planning on reading this book for a long time, but never got around to it until this spring. At that point, I was a little wary because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype, much like "The Hunger Games" didn't live up to its hype (for me). However, I was pleasantly surprised. I absolutely loved this book. I read it through twice in a matter of just days.

I felt the characters were very realistic, not too cliched or stereotypical. I felt the action was plausible and very real. The factions were fascinating and detailed. All of it drew me in.

I think this is the best out of the series, but the other two are worth reading.

Not another Hunger Games submitted by Jhopson on August 15, 2014, 4:48pm A good an interesting story. Not just another Hunger Games despite the similarities - A compelling but flawed young female lead, a love story and a futuristic dystopia. But a very different moral message about choosing what kind of person you will be.

Divergent submitted by SBNB on August 16, 2014, 8:38pm Excellent, excellent book. It’s another book that takes place in a dystopian future, but it’s better written than Hunger Games and a more filled-out story than The Giver. And there’s some ingenious subtlety to it that becomes apparent especially if you read the parts about the factions in the extra section at the end. But don’t read the extras before you finish the book!

story submitted by wowwow on August 22, 2014, 12:34am Very good story kind of like hunger games. Where you have to survive

Epic submitted by Bobo34 on June 15, 2015, 9:01am Cool Book!

Amazing submitted by miriam gandham on June 15, 2015, 8:49pm I loved this book! There was a lot of action as well as suspence.

Well done (says a mom) submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 22, 2015, 7:05am First, a completely editorial comment: here we ago again, another dystopian world that depends on the hormonal moods of a teenage girl.

Now, having said that... It's a YA book. That's what I get if I read a book that isn't targeted to me (I'm a 44 yo mom)! I very much appreciate that there are books aimed for pre-teens and teens, and books with strong female characters. I'm just not that age demographic any more. But I was interested to read it because (a) it was popular/ well received and (b) when my kids reach that point, I want to be well versed in what is out there for them.

Divergent is very well done. The idea that adults have divided the community into factions based on five different world views seems both far fetched and reasonable (are our liberal and conservative viewpoints so very different?). Once you accept that premise, having young adults needing to choose, and drawing out the story from there makes a world of sense. There are tipping points in a person's world, and sometimes in a society's. If those coincide, they'd make a great story, wouldn't they?

Well, here it is. And it's well written, with strong characters, depth, and draw. I'll enjoy when my kids get to this point and we can talk about it together.

Excellent submitted by leenajong on July 11, 2015, 8:34pm One of my favorites. Highly recommend!

good read submitted by airgood on July 25, 2015, 7:42pm I love teen dystopian novels, and this one did not disappoint. It's full of action and suspense. I would put it on par with The Hunger Games and Proxy.

Pretty Good submitted by catlover123 on August 1, 2015, 7:30pm It's good. I like how Tris being divergent is so dangerous and she can't let anyone know. I didn't like the ending. The whole thing with Tris and Four sleeping together kind of ruined the book for me.

Clever submitted by demunnik on August 7, 2015, 4:04pm Very clever dystopian society book. Intriguing world.

Great Beginning submitted by steveiew on August 18, 2015, 8:45am This book is an excellent start to the series.

Easy, fun read submitted by joylynn84 on June 20, 2016, 7:01pm This book was a super fun easy read. It is hard to put down so it was finished rather quickly. Great book!

Great submitted by erhizal on June 22, 2016, 12:09pm Great book. I would totally read it again. It has very well thought about characters and has a good plot. Very exciting, and I never wanted to set the book down! I would definitely suggest it for others, especially if you like The Hunger Games. It was similar in excitement, etc., but different in terms of plot and characters.

divergent submitted by nimerhockey on June 26, 2016, 12:55pm divergent was a good book because, it inspire me to have courage

WAY BETTER THAN HUNGER GAMES submitted by rchico on June 29, 2016, 4:08pm This book\movie is much much better than The Hunger Games! It takes us on an epic adventure with Tris, her family and her new "friends". Best book I've read in a while!!!

Nice submitted by kzheng on July 9, 2016, 4:51pm Several reviewers mention it is similar to the Hunger Games. Both take place in futuristic dystopian America with all people divided into specialized groups. The main character goes against these divisions and decides to overthrow the dictator-like leaders.

Divergent submitted by Rocko on June 24, 2017, 8:51pm The story is very captivating. It keeps you very interested the whole time!
There is not one boring part of the book, it all connects very well to the story.

Amazing submitted by eliadler on July 16, 2020, 10:39am This book has such an amazing story with complicated characters. You can never guess what is going to come next, and you will find this book hard to put down. Plus, there are very strong female characters.

awesome book! submitted by v_library on July 27, 2020, 1:31am i could not put this book down, it kept getting better and better! great first book to start the trilogy off with ;)

Good read! submitted by LegendaryBookworm on July 27, 2021, 6:49pm Personally, if you're looking for an action-packed dystopian novel with interesting world-building and a bit of a hunger-games vibe, I'd definitely recommend Divergent! It was enjoyable, though I thought it a bit hard to follow in some parts.

wait is this the hunger games? submitted by kath on July 31, 2021, 9:37pm really ? i read this book already. it was called the hunger games. just slightly change the characters and plot.

I'd give it 3.5 stars out of 5. submitted by graytabby on August 1, 2021, 5:15pm This is a good book! I'd recommend it to Hunger Games lovers, because the dystopian setting is quite similar. Instead of 13 districts, there are 5 factions: Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless. Each is known for a particular trait: Abnegation for deep selflessness, Amity for unbending kindness, Erudite for intellectual prowess, Candor for brutal honesty, and Dauntless for rash bravery. At 16, citizens of Chicago choose which faction they would like to spend the rest of their life in. The main character, Tris, growing up in Abnegation for all her life, chooses Dauntless, which comes as a surprise to her family, because there are a lot of disputes between the faction. When admitted to Dauntless, Tris undergoes the initiation, which selects the best of the Initiates for the faction. There, she meets Four, and falls in love.
Although this is a stellar novel, it's unbelievable at some points. For example, even though Dauntless is supposed to be brave, wearing all black and getting tattoos and piercings is going overboard.

AMAZING submitted by EuniceWe on August 17, 2021, 1:45pm AMAZING PLOT, AMAZING CHARACTERS>
You know what, just read all the other reviews ;)

VERY thrilling submitted by tjpasieka on June 13, 2022, 10:03pm I wanted to read the book after I heard some of my friends raving about it. I picked it up with little interest, and I could not put it down until the last page. Warning, though, this book is not for the faint of heart.

Nonstop action and excitement submitted by amandasaurus on June 19, 2022, 6:42pm Great premise, great well rounded plot, “normal” characters that aren’t one note with heroics and bravery. I really liked this series a lot-there’s of course the whole romance thing, but there is a lot of political issues and ethics to consider too which I really enjoyed.

ADDICTING submitted by cheon.eunjae on June 26, 2022, 9:37am When I first read this book I couldn't put it down and I spent the rest of the day reading. It is an amazing book full of romance and politics. If you are a fan of the Hunger games, I recommend reading this.

great story submitted by umich.reader on July 9, 2022, 4:24pm my favorite YA dystopian novel

Easy choice, highly reccomend submitted by The Book Broken Girl on August 5, 2022, 2:55pm All I’m going to say is if I had to choose between the three main dystopian series’, well, maze runner, hunger games, get out of the way before I butterknife you. Highly recommend. Also, this book manages to be one of my faves for the past year, which is impressive since I’m always reading. But I binged this series in one week, with extra pressure bc I was borrowing my teacher’s copies and it was the last week of school when I started.

a good read submitted by jwpark on August 7, 2022, 1:40am I finished this book series in middle school and I enjoyed it very much. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dystopian.

Absolute trash submitted by courtneyhooper on August 13, 2022, 12:06am A Hunger Games knock-off. I couldn’t even finish it. I loved the movie though, until that also turned to garbage.
