Highly Recommend

This is a deeply emotional book I always recommend to anyone who asks. There are few books that have affected me so profoundly. I stayed up way to late on a workday because I couldn't put it down. The author draws you in so completely with each of the characters, even minor details feel important while reading this. This novel is historical fiction taking place around the time of WWII in Japan and helps give a face to the radical shift in daily life and culture in Japan brought about WWII and the overall impact the war had on the people just trying to live their lives. To me it beautifully illustrates all the many ways in which our lives never really turn out the way we intend.
Full disclosure: I cried reading this. . . a lot, you might too. Just keep that in mind if you are someone who doesn't like to be upset by what you read. Otherwise its a fantastic read and everyone I've gotten to read it has enjoyed it.
