The perfect novel submitted by amy on June 22, 2014, 11:48am An enthusiastic essay from the New York Times a couple months ago brought me to this overlooked gem of a novel from 1965 about the unremarkable life of an academic told with great sensitivity and sympathy. It's a perfect novel, with no tricks or gimmicks, but I think the words of another reviewer from the book jacket put it best: "...riveting...because its author...treats his characters with such tender and ruthless honesty that we cannot help but love them." Another great NYR reissue submitted by jibkidder on June 29, 2022, 11:52am Loved this unrushed, sort of quiet narrative - unassuming but with plenty of depth. I get the impression that this book's reputation is growing over time and rightly so.
