Pt. 1. Dancelot's bequest -- pt. 2. The catacombs of Bookholm.
Optimus Yarnspinner inherits a manuscript by an unknown writer. To track down the author, he goes to Bookholm, the City of Dreaming Books, where book-related attractions abound.
Optimus Yarnspinner inherits from his godfather an unpublished manuscript by an unknown writer and sets off to track down the mysterious author, who disappeared into Bookholm - the so-called City of Dreaming Books. Yarnspinner falls under the spell of this book-obsessed metropolis, where an avid reader and budding author can find any number of charming attractions: priceless signed first editions, salivating literary agents, and for-hire critics. But as Yarnspinner pursues the trail of the missing author, the darker side of Bookholm begins to unveil itself - cold-blooded book hunters, cyclopean Fearsome Booklings, sharp-toothed Animatomes, and of course, the Shadow King, whose howls rise from deep beneath the city at night. Will Yarnspinner survive his quest into this world where reading is a genuine adventure?

Adventure story, with books, and monsters submitted by ssands on August 15, 2020, 9:55pm A book lover's adventure. There are a fun little easter eggs in this book for readers to find, like parodies of well-known writers. It starts with a young dinosaur searching for the author of an extremely moving piece of writing. It gets weirder and weirder... and a little weirder after that.

Are You a Bookling? submitted by OlfactoryBookworm on August 14, 2022, 11:33pm There’s so much to love about the characters that defend and protect books in this novel by Walter Moers. I don’t know if the author has ever visited our fair city, but am certain of one thing. There are more Booklings in Ann Arbor than there are fairy houses.

What’s a Bookling? It’s not a geek or a dork, as defined by slang.

Fandom’s description sheds light on the subject: “Each Bookling is named after a Zamonian author and dedicates his life to memorizing that writer's works. Having no original personalities of their own, each Bookling takes on characteristics from the literature they memorize and their author.”

Remember this the next time you visit a library or walk past the offices of HathiTrust (the folks that digitize books at the University of Michigan for the benefit of humankind). It is my belief, dear reader, that the catacombs of Bookholm exist holographically in the catacombs of HathiTrust.

Don’t believe me? Read “The City of Dreaming Books” and decide for yourself.
