Magical Realism at its finest submitted by nemiller on August 30, 2019, 12:57pm Machado uses Magical Realism to create eight explorations of the ways in which, as women, our bodies never fully belong to us. Any of these stories would make a great focus for a book group discussion.

Cool Anthology submitted by chowcy on June 28, 2023, 9:13am Every story in this book is independent so you can pick up and read a bit at a time and have a good stopping point. The stories span a lot of genres, Sci fi, fantasy, fable, which is cool. They all relate to women and feminism in some way, the writing can be very experimental at times too. Didn't always understand what was happening but appreciated the writing regardless

Incredible and thought-provoking submitted by juliablike on July 7, 2023, 5:19pm I adore Carmen Maria Machado. I recommend this collection to anyone who asks, and even those who don’t ask. These stories are incredibly well executed, and illuminate the darkest sides of oppressive systems, critique cultural norms, and highlight the subtle violence baked into womanhood and femininity.

Lots of Great Stories submitted by Poppy_Magee on July 22, 2023, 2:17am This book was so weird and brilliant and confusing and scary. No clue what happened but i’m pretty sure it’s genius.
My favorite stories were The Husband Stitch, Inventory, Mothers, and The Resident. Really did not get Especially Heinous. Real women have bodies was good, i feel neutral about Eight Bites and Difficult at parties.
Stories really ranged from a little bit of fantasy to straight up nonsensical, but i enjoyed it nonetheless.
