Scottie Ferguson, a San Francisco police detective is forced to retire when a freak accident gives him a severe case of acrophobia. Ferguson is hired by a rich shipbuilder to follow his wife who is behaving suspiciously and might be planning suicide. He falls in love with her, she is later murdered and Ferguson becomes demonic in his desire to re-create her in another woman.

Vertigo submitted by jaegerla on May 19, 2010, 3:45pm Only after seeing this a second time did I notice the spiral motif (the opening credits, her hair, the bouquet, the staircases, the tree trunks, the San Francisco streets). And only after seeing it twice did Scottie's obsession with death become more clear. Cool!

P.S. This is not to say that it is a movie that requires several viewings to appreciate. It's that after seeing it a second time it struck me how detailed it is and how much planning went into every scene and camera angle. The first time the plot alone sucked me in, the second time the costume and scenery stole the show.

A Piece of History submitted by jmwink_ on June 19, 2022, 11:15pm I think it’s best to watch this understanding it as an important document in the history of film than a movie you’re going to like. Some people may find the mystery interesting and I did enjoy watching everything come together, but it has a very different feel and pacing from a modern movie.

I first watched Vertigo much too young—on TV at around nine years old—and it’s haunted me ever
since and probably impacted most of my early relationships. What do I mean? I romanticized love. And it certainly impressed upon me that memory is almost always inaccurate.
Maybe I was eight or ten… who knows; at my age my twenties seem mythological. ;)
