"When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into the experience of various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists ..."-- Provided by publisher.

Book is actually about using psychedelic drugs submitted by hiker15 on August 17, 2020, 7:19pm The title of the book doesn't make any sense - - it is not about changing your mind (the way we would describe thinking that one choice is better then changing our minds in the face of new information and thinking that another choice is better) or being successful in changing someone else's mind.

Rather, it is about how the use of psychedelic drugs can cause your mind to enhance the way it perceives things. I liked Pollan's books about foods, but am very so-so on this one. It goes into minute detail on the history of psychedelic drugs and spends an excess of pages on his own journey to try different psychedelics to see their effect on his own mind.

To be honest, the only reason I slogged through the entire book is because it was one of the few I checked out at the last minute on the last day the library was open before it closed for COVID19 because it was large print and the title sounded interesting. I wouldn't recommend it.

Reconsidering stigmas submitted by blancharddana on June 29, 2022, 8:26am An interesting look at psychedelic medicine from both a scientific and historical perspective.
