"Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. "If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully," Pipher writes, "we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent.""--Dust jacket.

Interesting, true, but unremarkable info and book submitted by 21621031390949 on July 29, 2020, 12:59pm Mary Pipher seems like a really nice person. She’s just a little older than I, but if we met, I think we’d have a lot in common and would enjoy talking. That said, her books don’t do a lot for me. Her m.o. in social psychology is to interview a lot of people of a particular age cohort, then describe their experiences, identifying common themes and patterns, and commenting on these themes. She draws some conclusions about typical problems/issues/stressors and makes a few judgments about coping strategies. She’s obviously an amiable and skilled interviewer, and she is compassionate in her reporting.

I’m roughly in the author’s age cohort, and much of what she writes is accurately descriptive of what I’ve experienced and what I see in my friends and peers. I just don’t find in revelatory. I don’t feel that I’ve learned much of anything new. On the other hand, I have come away from this book feeling encouraged to live life in the moment, and while that’s not news, it’s good to be reminded at every opportunity!

Nothing new here submitted by snabbleon on August 27, 2020, 2:59pm I didn't finish this book because it was depressing from the start. How many times can you keep restating that the world doesn't like older women? Ok! I got it! Can we move on to...anything else but restating it in different voices? Skip.
