It's Electric! submitted by Meginator on August 26, 2020, 4:45pm This installment of Now That’s What I Call Music has surprising variety to it, despite the predominance of electronic instrumentation across the board. Most of these artists make an effort to distinguish themselves, and (aside from a mushy run in the album’s early-middle section) they largely succeed. This particular compilation maintains the recent focus on pop to the exclusion of other genres, but some hints of rock and country slip through on a few tracks, especially in the strong What’s Next segment (back down to a reasonable four tracks here). The Accidentals’ “Heavy Flag” may not have made the charts or the radio, but it is a wonderfully composed song with striking chord arrangements that give it a really unique feeling. Overall, though I wasn’t familiar with most of these tracks and didn’t get the nostalgia hit that the earlier Now That’s What I Call Music albums evoke, I was surprisingly pleased with the variety here and generally enjoyed the experience.
