Series information from Goodreads.com.
Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cutthroat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, she is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead. -- adapted from jacket

Wonderful. submitted by Cassildra on June 13, 2020, 10:48am Gideon the Ninth is about Gideon, a young orphaned woman from the Ninth who has a sword, a bunch of dirty magazines, and a fierce determination to get off the Ninth and away from her nemesis, Harrowhark "Harrow" Nonagesimus. The pair's fate is intertwined, however... And the story is as thrilling as it is, ultimately, heartbreaking.

I love this book so much.

Queer Gothic Sci-Fi/Fantasy Hodgepodge That Works submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:41pm Content Note: This book’s central relationship revolves around a servitude dynamic, and there is some gore (particularly blood).

This science fantasy novel is entirely unlike anything I’ve ever read before; billed (to me, at least) as Lesbian Necromancers in Space, it fully delivers on its premise but also offers so much more. Muir’s command of language is exquisite and hilarious: the characters are foul-mouthed and sarcastic, yet they never feel out of place in a world where the exalted leader is some sort of immortal/undead dude. I laughed out loud constantly while reading this, which is not an experience I expected from the cover. The novel is not without its faults (I’m not sure that the emotional climax is fully supported by the preceding text), but it’s a thrill ride from start to finish and a wholly unexpected punch to the face. But in a good way.

A change of pace submitted by mekgray on July 31, 2021, 12:39am I really appreciated the casual and unpretentious writing style. The witty quips and inappropriate punny humor of Gideon really made me fall in love with her

Awesome submitted by judahorli on August 16, 2021, 10:31am Just incredible queer goth sci-fi. It took about a third into the book for it to really grab me, but I'm so glad that I kept at it. Funny, intense, emotional.

Amazing Story submitted by Seth Peterson on June 16, 2022, 9:52am This book was amazing. It took a little bit for it to really grab you. but once it did, I couldn't put it down. And the author did a really good job on the ending. It was a really interesting way of combining different genres: fantasy, a little bit of sci-fi, and necromancy (I don't think that's a genre. but it should be). I can't wait to pick up the next book!

Something new submitted by renarde7 on June 20, 2024, 10:51pm This is a sci-fi/fantasy book unlike anything I've read before, and that alone gets some points. But it also has a fantastic, well developed cast of weird, frequently queer characters and a creepy and well built world for them to get weirder in. Can't wait to read the next one.

Strange but fun read submitted by Jeannette Quirk on July 30, 2024, 8:10am At first I had some trouble getting into this book; I didn't care about Gideon or Harrowhark or the story (although I mildly cheered Gideon on her escape attempt). However, when the book became a closed door mystery it really started to pick up and both characters became much more enjoyable to read.

fabulous audiobook submitted by nicole.pumarada on August 18, 2024, 3:35pm I listened to this book because I loved another work by the same author and narrator, "Princess Floralinda and the 40 Flight Tower." Both books have complex and intriguing female protagonists who undergo surprising transformation. Both books start out seeming semi-lighthearted and then surprised me by taking progressive dark turns, yet continuing to be infused with comedy. Gideon the Ninth is a more complex book. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but even while confused, I was hooked because the writing and narration are so good and Gideon is so funny. It's especially amusing to hear the perfect voice of narrator Moira Quirk spew profanities. The sequel is even more confusing and intriguing--it's a mystery! They're both mysteries, actually, which is a big reason why they are so confusing, but not in a frustrating way.
