It's Not Great Cinema, But It Sure Is Fun submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 5:23pm This action comedy fails to maintain a consistent emotional tone, but excellent performances and pitch-perfect odd-couple buddy-cop chemistry from Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista makes it work in the end. Many of the jokes feel improvised, making the main characters’ relationship feel organic, especially compared to similar films; the moment where the main characters find mutual respect feels genuine, and Nanjiani’s character acts realistically discombobulated and perplexed as he finds himself in the middle of an action movie. The fight scenes are creative, including one that makes great use of a sporting goods store, and the plot works just fine as a vehicle for the set pieces and humorous runs of jokes. The film tries a little too earnestly to insert some deeper thematics, making it a bit uneven, but overall it makes for an excellent popcorn-friendly diversion.
