The author's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming.

Damn submitted by kerenemoore on August 27, 2020, 1:59am Machado knocks this out of the park. She seeks a vocabulary, a paradigm, a method of communicating the unseen, misunderstood paradox that domestic violence in lesbian relationships presents. She does it artfully, wisely, painting with depth and endless analogies. We are pulled from shock to absurdity and back to reality again. You won't regret this read.

Must Read. submitted by gemr310 on July 1, 2021, 1:59pm Devastating and so important. Machado takes readers through her experience with domestic violence with creativity and poise. I couldn't put this book down.

Love it, plan to return to this again and again submitted by cbae on August 26, 2021, 1:40pm This one really hit hard. Machado weaves a rich and often devastating narrative of a complicated past relationship, drawing on folk tales and mythology to creatively express the nuances of connection between two people. I was sad to read it so quickly, but will return to it again and again. This work contributes important representation of abuse in queer partnerships and calls into question the complexity of any interpersonal relationship.

So Good! submitted by bookasaurusray on July 27, 2022, 10:32am The writing style is *chef's kiss*. This is not a light memoir, but it was such a rich and devastating memoir.

Mesmerizing and hauntingly crafted submitted by foilista on June 23, 2023, 1:26pm This formally inventive and self-reflexive memoir about queer domestic abuse was one of the best books I've read recently. I'd teach it in a class about trauma and narrative, along with Tim O'Brien, Saidiya Hartman, Christina Sharpe, and that one New Yorker piece from last year about traumatic memory.
