Carcassonne is a tile-placement game in which the players draw and place a tile with a piece of southern French landscape on it. The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland or some combination thereof, and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played, in such a way that cities are connected to cities, roads to roads, etcetera. Having placed a tile, the player can then decide to place one of their meeples on one of the areas on it: on the city as a knight, on the road as a robber, on a cloister as a monk, or on the grass as a farmer. When that area is complete, that meeple scores points for its owner.

Great Game submitted by mollybshire on January 5, 2021, 5:00pm This game is fairly straightforward to learn and combines both luck and strategy for beginners through more thoughtful play.

Good family game submitted by mowjac on April 16, 2021, 5:30pm This is a good family game, as you build the map as you go along. Keeping track of scoring is the trick. I find this a slow game, good for socializing.

Really good game submitted by AnnAsplund on October 14, 2021, 2:58pm This is a game that is just as fun with 2 players as with 5 or more. House rule tip for playing with younger players - skip the farmers - it makes it easier to score, and you get more meeples to play with :) The same goes with many of the other expansions, it is quite fun to simply play the basic game with the additional tiles.

Great Game submitted by betsywil on July 15, 2022, 10:33pm This fun game works well for two players, or for up to 5. You can finish a game in under 30 min.

Great for a variety of ages submitted by JennJenn on August 11, 2022, 2:56pm This is a game that you can play with the whole group --little kids, big kids and adults. Each will take their own approach to it but all can have fun doing so.

Good for All Ages submitted by samuelbs on July 14, 2023, 2:21pm 2–5 Players. A thoughtful tile placement game for all ages. It's satisfying to complete a large city or a long road. It has simple gameplay and some good decision making. Originally released in 2000, there are more recent tile placement games that have improved on Carcassonne's weaknesses, but it still has a spot in my heart.
