"In 1851, at a remote village in the Scandinavian tundra, a Lutheran minister known as Mad Lasse tries in vain to convert the native Sámi reindeer herders to his faith. But when one of the most respected herders has a dramatic awakening and dedicates his life to the church, his impetuous son, Ivvár, is left to guard their diminishing herd alone. By chance, he meets Mad Lasse's daughter Willa, and their blossoming infatuation grows into something that ultimately crosses borders-of cultures, of beliefs, and of political divides-as Willa follows the herders on their arduous annual migration north to the sea. Gorgeously written and sweeping in scope, The End of Drum-Time immerses readers in a world lit by the northern lights, steeped in age-old rituals, and guided by passions that transcend place and time"-- Provided by publisher.

Wonderment submitted by flemingj on June 13, 2024, 9:01am I really didn’t expect to be so wowed by this book. Could not stop reading/listening. Very unique and powerful.
Great read submitted by sarajowaycee on June 15, 2024, 9:04pm I couldn’t put this book down. It was gripping from the beginning. A historical fiction deep dive into a colonial frontier in northern Scandinavia. Knowing this., I went in expecting it to be a mixture of sad and intense at times and I was right!
Top-notch historical fiction

I have difficulty picking out the most arresting feature of Hanna Pylväinen’s second novel, The End of Drum-Time. There’s her prose—exquisite, fluid sentences written in an omniscient voice that seamlessly shifts focus from one character to the next, like a long tracking shot in a movie. The plot Pylväinen unfurls is also compelling, telling the story of encounter and conflict and misunderstandings between the Sámi people of northern Scandinavia and the settlers moving onto their lands. I was also fascinated by Pylväinen’s ability to establish the setting of her novel, creating the world of 1851 Sápmi with details from the physical environment to the smallest elements of material culture.
Pylväinen blends these elements together to create a book that I could not put down. The End of Drum-Time is top-notch historical fiction, bringing the reader into the homes and lives of both the settlers and the Sámi. Larger forces are imposing changes on the Sámi: national borders are hardening, settlers are converting some to Christianity, their traditional migratory rhythms are under threat. In this, Pylväinen narrates an experience shared by Indigenous communities around the world, but firmly grounded in that of the Sámi during the late 19th century. The settlers from the south are learning that in Sápmi they cannot unilaterally impose their will on either the people or the land around them. Like the earthquake that opens the book, a great disturbance is coming to Sápmi, bound to affect the lives of all who live there—settlers and Sámi alike. The End of Drum-Time shows us one moment in time that continues to have ripple effects for generations to come.
