Robert M. Teeter Passes In Manchester
MANCHESTER - Robert Monroe Teeter, 93 years old, one of the last Civil war veterans in Washtenaw county, died this morning at his home here.
Mr. Teeter served two years and 10 months in the Civil war, part of that time with the Army of the West. He was born Aug. 6, 1846, in Trumansburg, N. Y., the son of Joseph E. and Elizabeth Britton Teeter. He enlisted Sept. 19, 1863, at the age of 17, and became a sergeant in Company E of the 21st New York regiment. He was given an honorable discharge July 5, 1866, in Denver, Colo.
He was married in 1873 to Miss Mary E. Rushton, who died Oct. 29, 1900. He married Miss Nettie Taylor Jan. 18, 1912. He had resided in Manchester since 1868, with the exception of a few months when he worked in a shingle mill in northern Michigan.
He was one of the Civil war veterans who returned to Gettysburg in July, 1938, for the 75th anniversary of the famous battle there.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Elma Smith of Addison and Mrs. Pearl Gray of Bridgewater township; a son, Herbert M., of Union City; a grandson, Howard Teeter; and a great-grandson, Robert M. Teeter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Jenter funeral home, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Rev. John Bunny will officiate. Military rites will be conducted at the grave by the American Legion post, No. 117, of Manchester.
Friends may call at the residence until Wednesday noon.
