we would respecttully retnind our subscribere, that the long expec'ed end hopeful pcriod, known by tlie appellation of "af ter harvesf' has now arrived. Tlns is a kind of an i animal golden age, when all who are indebted flatter their creditors with hopes of being nble topay, and creuitors flntter themselves with the assurance of receiving their long expected dues. This pcriod is of the more interest to uf, because we stand in the doublé relalion of debtors and creditors. Forsometime past, our expenses of publlcation Inve been forty dollars per week, while our receipts hnve not averaged more thon ten dollars. The cunsequence of doing business in tliis wav is ihe inenrring of heavy Jiabilities which must i however, be met at the specified time. Our j principal resource to meet these (Iemands, is our suhscription list. This now embraces the names of more then fifteen hundred persons, of whotn about 1250 are permanent subs-enbers. Of these last, acconiing lo our terms, at least 700 are indebted to us two dollars or more, each. The great nïójority of onr subscribers nre ' farmers, ond have expecied to pay subscriptions as soon as they could dispose of Iheir crops. We trust they will hear tliis; in mind, and act upon it as a matter of principie. To witlihold two dollars where it is due and needed, as a Hule injnstice, and produces a little cmbarrassment. This litlle, multipliedby seven hundred, amouiils to vntch injustice and serious perplexity. We doubt not, however, that 'the times' have rendered it impossble for many to meet even our small deinands. We atlribute no blame to such, but j anticípate they will relieve our nectesilies with the proceeds of their first load of produce. Our receipts for the Signal wil! hereafter be , published every other week, thus superseding , the necessity of sending recoipts by mail . { Postmasters will forward paymenls for the s Signal, if requested. ■ A word to the wise is said to be sufficient; ( and if we find by our receipts that our sub senbers are wisp.we shall not jinporume lltem j wilh 'words' on this subject.
